The last battle led me to suppose I may have underestimated the value of archers. But mostly I used archery to pull, and the pinning shot when I wanted to solo a pull (in the fade, for example).
Oh, and I noticed one thing that really made those Revenants in the Brecilian Forrest melt away like the morning dew – being 18th level. It turned out I could then just gang up on the bastards, with the help of some teke to sweeten the pot.
I actually managed to kill a Revenant at level 7 (during the Circle Tower quest). I had Alistair, Wynne, Leliana, and my 2H warrior/berserker. I had to micromanage like crazy and used up all my healing poultices, but I did it! I’m kindof surprised I pulled it off, actually. On Normal mode, even.
Heh–this might be the key. We are in the Brecilian Forest, and we’re 13th-14th level. Leliana is definitely archer-specced, and she was the first one I was thinking of getting rid of: Wynne’s totally heal-specced (with a little earth damage/petrify thrown in), and her mass rejuvenation/revival/mass heal stuff was keeping people going pretty well. But maybe I should get rid of her.
I saw elsewhere that arcane warrior was in the Brecilian Forest. Can I ignore the revenants for awhile and still unlock that specialty? If so, that’s what I’ll do–but if not, I want to go ahead and get it. I actually have a couple of spell slots on my main still open in anticipation of gaining that specialty.
It’s not in the forest, but in the dungeon that follows. (The werewolves retreat from your incursion into an underground ruins.)
It doesn’t appear that all Revenants are made the same. Oh, sure, you’ve got your normal I’m-going-to-kick-your-ass Revenant, but then I think you’ve got your in-the-name-of-everything-unholy-they’ll-never-wish-they-found-your-body Revenant. I think the difference is if the Revenant is one of the ones that refers to the quest with the 6 bloody thumbprints. It could very well be that there are only 6 Revenants in the entire game and I haven’t been paying attention, but it seems that there’s more. Those 6 are assholes. The others can be painful, but not compared to those 6. So far, there was 1 in the Circle Tower and 2 in the ruins by the werewolf lair.
Re: Revenant
I always find fire to be a great help in killing them; they seem to be immune to spirit and cold.
For boss fight, I will always recommend Wyne’s Double Combo - Glyph of Paralysis and Glyph of Repulsion. Use Repulsion first (because the glyph does not disappear even if it is resisted), then use Paralysis and when the boss is immobile, hack it to pieces.
They also have high armor rating, so Shattering Shot and so on might be needed.
Man, I just finished this game for the first time and I’m surprised how it affected me. Not that I was an emotional wreck, but a game hasn’t really moved me this much for a long time.
My character was romancing Alistair, all was well, and it’s such a sweet romance, with him being the bashful virgin.
But then we find out a Warden has to die to kill the Archdemon. Well, that Orlaisian guy offered, but died earlier, and I didn’t let Morrigan sleep with Alistair to conceive an alternative vessel for the Archdemon’s soul, so it was up to one of us.
Alistair didn’t even give my character a choice, just went charging the Archdemon. And died. And I just got the feeling I had when I first saw Khalid’s body in BG II. Which was a combination of wow and a lot of aww, and some of “those bastards”.
So I would greatly recommend this game. Especially to anyone who liked the plot and character story of BG.
Also, how did your game end? Who died, what happened, what was different?
I’ll be playing it through again as soon as I get tired of the latest Sims expansion.
I was sorely disappointed with the final battle sequence. After building one mage for crowd control and debuffing, I lose that mage. Given that this game is built much, much more like a MMORPG than its antecedents, I was so hampered in the final battles I had to reduce the difficulty. It was not fun. I found the mindless armies useless or worse, drawing aggro when I needed to micromanage controlling aggro because of no crowd control, especially being unable to lockdown the mages.
Because of the game design, I always felt pigeon-holed into a specific style of play. Also, given the mage dependence, perhaps more mage characters and less warriors should have been designed. The only thing they got right were the number of rogue NPCs.
I romanced Morrigan during the game then impregnated her to survive at the end. She disappears never to be seen again but one time i felt she was thinking about me through the ring she gave me so she could always locate me. Alistair and the queen married, i freed the circle of magi from the templars, Shale and Wynne went off together to find out if she could be turned back into a dwarf, Zevran decided to hang out with me and grey wardens, Oghren stayed with Alistair as a commander in his armies, Leiliana went back to Orlais and Sten went back to report to his people after telling me he considered me a friend. The elves were granted lands and the dwarves became more isolationist under Harrowmont.
The other three are : one in the Deep Roads, one in a random street in Denerim, one in the dwarven royal palace (not too sure about that last one).
And yeah, those six are particularly bastardly, because they’ve got some kind of melee DoT, or a damage shield of some kind. In any case, anybody who whacks at them gets hurt bad and quick. Against those, even if you have absolutely zilch proficiency in bows whatsoever it pays to just tend the one guy to tank them while the rest of the group plinks away. It’ll take a while, but you’ll waste a lot less poultices that way.
Well, I finally got that revenant, and another one that showed up shortly thereafter. The ones in the bloody bottles, though–I’ve tried fighting them a few times, and never gotten one below about 2/3 health before there’s a TPK. It may have something to do with my mage being so heavily cold-specced, with insect swarm as backup damage, and the revenants seemingly immune to both.
Thanks for the advice!
I got the philactery Revenant at around level 8 (the one in the Ruins in the wood [both of them, actually]) with Alister and my dog as tanks, Leliana with the bow, my mage with cold and electricity and quite a large amount of poultices. This was on normal.
They may be immune to cold damage, but they still usually freeze up from the scone of cold, which gives my party a much needed breather.
I did have a lot of trouble with them the first time round, and am unsure of what exactly I am doing right this time.
For breather, I prefer Wyne’s Paralysis Storm, but it takes a bit of positioning to make sure you don’t freeze your guy by mistake.
Force Field makes revenants a breeze. Its almost cheating really.
Force Field makes everything easy. It really needs to be modded/patched so at the very least enemies will ignore any creature under its effect, which would be more realistic. Taunt really shouldn’t draw aggro under those conditions.
It certainly isn’t cheating, but it is cheesy :). So is the dual mage Cone of Cold setup - it either needs to be better resisted by bosses or have a little longer cooldown or both.
Argh! Brood Mother is impossible on hard!
Those darn tentacles are tough to kill and they wipe out my party regularly, not to mention the genlocks and shriekers who come out mid-battle. I manage to get off one fire storm, a fireball or two and maybe get Brood Mother down to about 50% health before complete party wipe.
What should my strategy be? Ignore the tentacles? Try to take them out?
You can position your party away from the brood mother in such a way to only let them hit your tank, take them out first then her. Its just a matter of bringing enough pots.
Yeah! Took that b*!&! down! Thanks, this strategy worked like a charm.
I didn’t realize I had such an emotional investment in this game until I got to Landsmeet and started getting super upset over things. I haven’t progressed beyond Landsmeet now. I know however it ends, I’ll probably be upset.
My character is a human noble in a relationship with Alistair. (I love Alistair. He’s so funny.) Is there any way I can end it so I end up living happily ever after with Alistair?
Does he have to knock up Morrigan or else he commits suicide? I’m going to be so very very sad if he dies, or if he hates me 'cause I forced him to be king. Help?
