After the 17th, I don’t expect to be seen for the next month or so. I don’t think I’ve been this anxious for a game ever! Or will be again. Well, until Half-Life 3 (or Portal 3, whichever comes first).
I’m trying to keep my expectations down but it’s not working.
Yeah, I’ve been carefully avoiding info to try to keep my hopes from getting to high, or possibly even setting up to wait until the price drops.
But… No.
I made the mistake of watching the latest trailer, then compounded the mistake by following a link to a glowing review. Now the only question is, will I be pre-ordering the basic version tonight, or pop for the deluxe for the extra Shinys. I am so weak-willed for RPGs.
I broke my promise to myself to never pre-order a game again for this. Or rather I modified my own rule for the following reasons:
I really like RPGs
The embargo on reviews was lifted a week ago which tells me the devs have confidence in their game as well as being able to see that nearly all reviews are very favorable (in particular reviewers I trust).
Origin has a return policy. I can return the game up to 24 hours after I first start playing the game.
That return policy cinches it for me so I went ahead and pre-ordered.
The only other game I am considering pre-ordering is The Witcher 3. CD Projekt Red has earned my trust.
Bioware has made a website called Dragon Age Keep where you can input decisions you made in the first two games. This will generate a file you can import into Inquisition that will modify the game based on those previous decisions (there is no way to import previous save games into Inquisition so this is the only way).
It is a very extensive list of things you can modify. There is a PC Gamer video walking through all the choices and the video is nearly 2.5 hours long. Really goes to show just how much depth there is in these games.
I pre-ordered too based on reviews. They are also allowing streaming to allow people who received a review copy (or EA Access early play on Xbone) to show off the game.
My only concern was how PC controls are implemented but it seems ok.
I never played the second one after I saw the reviews, but I thought I had done a semi through job on Origins, but there was a lot of stuff on the tapestry I guess I missed. Oops.
Ugh, even my favorite gaming news site RPS is praising it. I might just need to bite the bullet and pay the full price, even if that sort of thing really hurts my wallet.
I just read the rockpapershotgun.com review and that killed the last vestiges of my willpower. I’ll be ordering it by noon. Everything I’ve seen makes it a must buy. The few negatives I’ve seen aren’t deal-breakers for me.
Like, Arrogance, paying full price is gonna suck. I’m doing it anyway.
You’ll need to have an account to access the “VIP” pricing but that’s the only barrier. Just make an account and click the link for it.
GMG is a reputable 3rd party digital games seller. They sell authorized keys for Steam, Uplay and Origin. You could probably find it cheaper through a shady CD-Key merchant but I figured you’d be happier with a fully legitimate copy at a slight discount.
Or 49.99e instead of 59.99e, which is slightly bigger discount. After looking through my bank account statements today I ended up buying it. GMG’s site was easy and painless to use and they gave me the key instantly so no hassle there.
Downloading the 24 Gb now. I guess that’s not even especially big HD space hog by today’s standards.
I was lamenting the fact that my computer is busted, but the lack of a save import option means I care a little less about ensuring that I play this version on the PC. Now to dig around and see how the PS4 version is holding up in reviews…
Frankly I cannot spot any big differences. That said it is YouTube quality (even at 1080) so that washes away a lot of differences right there (only 30fps for starters not to mention compression).
From what I have seen there may even be a slight preference for the console since control in the game seems to slightly prefer a controller over m/kb. That said I suspect both work fine.
In the end game devs these days are writing to the lowest common denominator. It is getting rarer to see PC versions that stand head and shoulders above their console counterparts.
Bottom line: My guess is any version will be fine.
