Impulse, as in - "Hey! This looks pretty cool! I don’t know much about it, but here’s my money!
How’d they turn out?
My own:
Torchlight. Seems pretty fun. I’ve played two characters to level 6 on normal, I’m thinking I probably should restart on hard difficulty. The Diablo influence is unsurprising and heavy; since I played the hell out of DII I’m pretty OK at this sort of game. i like the art style; I’m still unconvinced on only three character classes. I do love the streamlined Diablo gameplay. And I played probably 1000 hours of DII Hardcore, so I think I’ll be sticking with this game.
Elemental: War of Magic. So far this has been a colossal disappointment, but I suspect it will turn out very well (in about six months, lol). Entirely my own fault. I was already reaching for my credit card when I heard the devs refer to it as a spiritual successor to Master of Magic; I selectively ignored all the dev communications saying “Hey, the beta will suck. We really mean suck. We are not giving you a game, we are giving you the chance to pay to be beta testers. And it will not be fun. Repeat: This is work, not fun.”
Heh, silly me. Once it’s a game I have a good feeling I’ll like it.
Dragon Age: Origins Damn it, this is a real gamble. It’s a Bioware game, downloading as we speak. God I hope this one delivers. I have never before enjoyed a Bioware game (and I’ve played several). Always respected them, never could get into them. But I saw the PA forums exploding with praise for the game; Metacritic agreed, the trailers I watched all seemed quite interesting. Please, let this game deliver. I have Friday off; hopefully dedicated to getting into this one.
Hollywood Video is closing most of their Game Crazy stores and there’s nothing to make me go more crazy than a game store going out of business. I spent about $100 there a few days ago and got twenty new games.
Dragon Age is very… Biowarian for lack of a better term. Thing Baldur’s Gate meets Mass Effect. Deep story line that is very linear in the beginning but then opens up. Lots and lots of conversations to enjoy, most of which have drastic impacts later on in the game. Sometimes you won’t see them coming too. combat is tactical and difficult.
If any of that dissapoints you, you might have purchased wrong If you do like it, drop by the Dragon Age thread and share your tips/findings! I’m only a few hours outside the origin story and I’m loving it so far.
My impulse buys:
Borderlands - I heard good things about it from console players so I gave it a shot. Really sweet loot system. The character development is not as fleshed out as I would have liked, but it gives you a decent amount of options to play and you don’t have to stick to your character’s archtype. Worthy game title to own and I’ll go back to it when I want to take a breka from Dragon Age (so next year some time ).
Penumbra - I was itchign for a new adventure game a few months ago and got this without checking out the demo first. I did not like it. Boring stealth scenes without the depth of gameplay from a thief series game and clunky interactions with the environment. I remember being unable to ope a hatch at the very beginning of the game three times (and dying because of it) before I figured out I wasn’t clicking on the right part.
I want to make an impulse buy soon. I’m debating on the following:
Ratchet & Clank
Demon’s Souls
Borderlands
Dragon Age
Other than R&C, I’m looking for the most “Diablo II” of the games. I love loot, I love dungeon crawling, I love a challenge, I love replayability. Any thoughts from the PS3 crowd (both of you)?
I don’t generally buy games all that often. I’ve been a WoW player since about the time it came out and I love me some D2 and MoD:MW.
This week I’ve bought Borderlands, Torchlight, and pre-ordered MW2. Either I’ve got new impulse control issues, or this is just a month of great games.
I played the demo of Torchlight, and I was hooked. The art style is neat, the character trees are interesting and I love getting new loots. The creators are old-school Blizzard, so I’m not surprised that it’s good. It’ll be interesting to see what the MMO version looks like in a couple of years.
Borderlands is entertaining. I’ve got a slowly expanding group of friends who play the game on Xbox live (same handle as my member name here, BTW) and it’s a lot of fun to play with a group. I don’t mind the solo play most of the time, either. I’ve started Brick, the soldier, and the hunter. The Hunter is probably my favorite so far, but every group benefits from the Soldier’s medic tree, so I’m making one because no one else wanted to. We’ll see how that goes. Mostly, I laugh every time Scooter says things.
MW2 is a game that’s going to *force *me to play it. I hope I have time for *other *things when I’m not playing it.
For the first time ever, my wife and I pre-ordered a game. About 15 minutes after showing her preview footage of New Super Mario Bros. Wii we had a claim ticket for it for Nov. 15.
Can’t wait.
NBA 2k10. There’s a mode called MyPlayer and I’m addicted. I’m playing ~three games a night. I fire it up the moment I’m home. Before I eat, get undressed, anything.
I was all psyched up to get MW2 next week. But now I have been seeing such good reviews of Dragon Age that now I’m not sure which one to get first. Normally I’d just get both, but unemployment has seriously reduced my expendable income. I suppose I could get one now and then, hope to get the other for Christmas. Any advice on which I should get first?
I had to get a console peripheral and ended up getting Lost Odyssey. The game itself is good, but I’m very tired of unlocking dreams. When I game, I want to game, and I don’t want to read massive walls of text.
I’d go with Dragon Age first. Buy it while every one is talking about it. You’ll have more fun that way. Even if you’re late on the MW2 purchase, I have a feeling people will play it a lot longer and, therefore, you wont feel like you’re missing out.
My last impulse buy (as opposed to impulse DL… I’m poor :() was Blood Bowl.
I regret it, a bit, because the AI is worse than what I could have coded by farting across my keyboard. To which the answer would, of course, be : play against real people. Except real people suck worse. 49.9% horrible cheaters and exploiters, 49.9% horrible players. That precious 0.02% is hard to come by.
Also : no Undead. Shame on Cyanide !
OTOH, when I *do *find a player who’s as good as I am (this is not tooting my own horn, this is me having played BBowl for years), and who cares about winning as much as I do (which is to say : none), it’s great fun. Rare, great fun. Purple fun, for you WoW players.
Muramasa for the Wii. A 2-d sidescroller with light RPG elements (leveling up, buffs, etc) and gorgeous art and visuals. Bought a used copy on impulse and am loving it.
Well, you talked me into it. I bought Dragon Age yesterday afternoon. I managed to stop playing and get some sleep earlier this morning. I may have made a mistake considering that I still have a month left before the semester is over.
That was one of my impulse buys, mostly because it was $20 for a 3 game pack.
Granted they are short games, but still. I didn’t like it much at first, but found it got better as it went along. Black Plague was creepy as hell, like Black Mesa without the military.
Recently picked up the Witcher because it was $20 special on steam, and I’ve been curious to play that game for a while.
Pre-ordered MW2 because I loved COD4:MW and I want to play it ASAP, both because I’m curious how good it is and because work is about to get very busy, and I want to get as much playtime in before that happens.
Got Dragon Age, but because of the aforementioned work thing, I don’t want to start it until things settle down a bit. 100 hours seems incredibly intimidating to start when I know my free time is about to go down the crapper.
