The dreaded man hug

Most awkward moment of Thanksgiving was when the in-laws’ parents arrived. Big flurry of hugs, until Gramps-in-Law (the aged academic from almost-Alberta) met the youngest’s girlfriend. He went from getting hugged, which was clearly new territory (especially after Covid*), and turned around to face this young girl who he didn’t know. She saw his arms out, spread hers as she moved in…

… and he slapped his arms down to his side and tried to fend her off with his shaking hand.
(Both meanings work here)

Other than that, wonderful day.

*By the way, I love Covid. Even now, I can put my fist out for a bump. If someone looks offended, I can say “Got some symptoms, getting tested this afternoon. Nothing personal.”

A hug is like a lit joint, I never refuse if offered.

I do understand that some people are just not huggers. But I can’t help but think of the terms “gay panic” and “toxic masculinity” when men cringe at hugging other men.

Hugs and kisses are usually positive signs of affection, but not always:

There is a famous video of my wedding where new father-in-law and I - right up on the altar in front of a big crowd - performed the do-we-hug-or-do-we-shake dance routine.

(wasn’t that a Clash song?)

mmm

His version of “No homo” I presume?

I like this line!
