The effects of the human voice

Why is it we place more stock in the utterences of one another when said utterances are uttered in the low male voice? For proof, please listen to the eventing news or at least examine this Bush-friendly site  Both the News and the majority of those brilliant persuasions feature, “the low male voice.”

More confusing still, however, is why the high male voice (Pavoratti, Most male pop vocalists) inspires more passion?

What makes you think that this is the reaction we have to voices? I see plenty of news readers here in Australia who have voices with a middle range tone/timbre.

Men with deep voices have traditionally been used for radio/TV mainly, I think, because their voices carry well and possibly sound more mature.

However I remember seeing on some show about aviation technology, that the USAF was of the opinion that a female voice is more likely to get the attention of a pilot than a male one. They were trying female automated voices for various warning systems.

“‘And Saruman has powers you do not guess. Beware of his voice!’”

“Suddenly another voice spoke, low and melodious, its very sound an enchantment. Those who listened unwarily to that voice could seldom report the words that they heard; and if they did, they wondered, for little power remained in them. Mostly they remembered only that it was a delight to hear the voice speaking, all that it said wise and reasonable, and desire awoke in them by swift agreement to seem wise themselves. When others spoke they seemed harsh and uncouth by contrast; and if they gainsaid the voice, anger was kindled in the hearts of those under the spell. For some the spell lasted only while the voice spoke to them, and when it spoke to another they smiled, as men do who see through a juggler’s trick while others gape at it. For many the sound of the voice alone was enough to hold them enthralled; but for those whom it conquered the spell endured when they were far away, and ever they heard that soft voice whispering and urging them. But none were unmoved; none rejected its pleas and its commands without an effort of mind and will, so long as its master had control of it.”
LOTR III:10 “The Voice of Saruman”

The human voice changes according to the circumstances in which the human finds itself. If panicked, the vocal chords tighten, causing the pitch of the voice to rise (girly scream). During sex, the chords relax and the pitch lowers. Therefore high voices sound exciting while low voices sound sexy. Adding reverb to a singer makes their voice sound fuller and sexier, which is why it’s done so often.

If you’ve ever heared David Beckham talk you’ll be surprised at the pitch of his voice: it’s high! It also sounds silly, effeminate and weak to most people. Perhaps this is because we match deep voices to our fathers, the most common dispenser of authority.

I wager that most newsreaders are mature men with deep to middle voices. Their female offsiders are younger with deep to middle voices.
