The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

Those spriggan’s are super hard to defeat.

I’ve been playing my spell-sword character with some very low level destruction spells (flames and sparks), and I finally picked up my first couple of spell books, including one fire spells that send a burning projectile flying towards an enemy.

First time I used it it hit some poor sap, picked him up and hurled him across the room.

Full of win.

I killed a bunny. I was very remorseful about this, and even more so when I noticed that there is an entry for “Bunnies Slaughtered” in the General Stats menu. Please don’t tell me that this is something like ADoM where near the end of the game there is a special bonus for not killing a single bunny the entire game.

I had a couple of cool run ins with dragons: my first was when I ran into one in the wild while I was still very low level. It was a lot of me sprinting for cover and hiding behind rocks until I lost him (he got into a fight with a giant and I just got the hell out of there). Later, I was higher level and I saw one flying around in the distance in the mountains and I absolutely hunted it down. Both events were really cool for how ‘real’ they felt.

Based on what I’ve read here so far, it seems like this game engine is ripe to be modded into a Monty Python-esque theatre of absurdity. Has anyone done that kind of thing with Oblivion or even Morrowind?

Um, yes.

I’ve realized that smithing is a ridiculously powerful skill. Improving weapons and armor is a massive difference when you’re capped. I’ve enchanted some leather armor and bracers as well as a ring and amulet that each give a bonus of around 24% to smithing, and have potions that boost it by 110%; they all stack. It looks like I can over double the damage of a sword, and boost my armor’s strength to ridiculous heights (I can also about triple the value of a piece of gear for the price of a single ingot and part of a potion).

Okay, now we’re talking! :stuck_out_tongue:

To anyone contemplating buying Oblivion: It’s currently 75% off on Steam.

Reminds me of Divinity 2: Ego Draconis. Bunnyslayer’s reward

Has anyone fully joined the Companions and gotten lycanthropy? I’m at the point in the quest line where I’m given a choice to do the whole werewolf thingy. Is it worth getting? Any downsides?

Upside: 100% disease immunity, fairly powerful melee combatant power that avoids those blasted disarm shouts.

Downside: cannot get a rested or well-rested bonus, the shapechange is fairly slow (don’t use it in battle,) using it in town will result in mass slaughter, can’t loot while active, and you end up in your skivvies when it wears off.

edit: and YMMV, it’s either were OR vamp, both give permanent immunity to the other, even if cured, apparently.

Hopefully you guys can help, I didn’t want to start a new thread just for my little request.

I never really gave Skyrim much of a glance as my PC usually is not up to the task of taking on new releases. I’m seeing all the adds/screenshots/YouTube videos and I couldn’t imagine seeing what it might look like on my machine, and I don’t want to be disappointed. My system seems to meet the minimum requirements, but I’m not sure how the game will play. So, Here’s my rig in general:

Dual core 3.0Ghz
2 GB RAM
Nvidea Geforce GTS 250 (512MB)

Pretty much the bare minimum. My Fear is, back when Fallout 3 came out, I had the same rig, but with a GeForce 7600 GT, which meet the recommended requirements (Except for the GPU, which was just above the minimum), and the game, graphics-wise, was less than stellar. I don’t want to fork over the dough and be disappointed with Skyrim.
What would you suggest? Has anyone tried playing with the minimum requirements? I do have a PS3, but have not tried playing a RPG on the console before - any good?

Thanks!

I can’t speak for your specs (I’ve only recently gone back to PC gaming and as such am a bit out of touch), but regarding the PS3 I wouldn’t worry. I know people that have bought it for the PS3 and are loving it. I personally put 120 hours into Fallout 3 on the 360, drinking in every moment. And frankly, there are complaints from PC users that the user interface is designed a bit too much with console owners in mind.

In short, I’d say if you’re worried, just get the PS3 version. You’ll have a great time.

I am really loving Skyrim. They fixed fixed FIXED FIXED the stupid ass broken oblivion leveling system! You are no longer punished for gaining levels!

Sure, they took a bunch of skills out of the game, but each skill has a talent tree now! There are MORE ways to customize your character than in Oblivion!

According to the devs the lowest settings on PC = console and those specs should allow you to play at medium at better than 720p.

This game doesn’t require much to run. And is only taxed when you increase the distance of view by a lot.

So in terms of graphics you will do better than the consoles. If that’s all you care about, then there’s no reason why you should not play a version that will run better (the PS3 has some serious performance issues), and will have access to mods, imperceptible loading times, and quick save!

Ok, I looked it up. Your card is way better than a console. This guy is running it at 1600x900 with your GPU:

Looks better and runs better than the console version’s I’ve seen (xbox 360).

The difference is significant.

Thanks Kinthalis. Looks like I’ll shoot for the PC version. Now how does this “always online” business work? Is it just for authenticating the game when installing? I’m on cellular Internet (slower than dsl), will that be a problem? I plan to purchase the game from a store vs download (the last game I tried downloading off of Steam took 4 days straight)

You’ll need to be online to activate the game on Steam. There is also a day 1 patch you probably want and Steam will auto download. I believe it was something like 160 MB, but I’m not sure.

So that might delay you if you’re on a slow internet connection.

But once it’s activated you don’t have to be online at all. You can go into off-line mode. And moreover, Steam won’t be doing anything on the background. So you can stay online if you want, it’s not going to clog up your connection or anything.

I believe Steam will ask you to reconnect briefly every couple of months, so you can’t go off-line indefinitely.

If you’re worried about that day 1 patch, you might want to maybe install the game to a laptop first, go to a wireless hotspot or the library or a friend’s house, or what have you to download the patch. Then just copy over the game folder to your main PC and you’re set.

I am gonna cut off the legs of every jackass in the wizard college. I wasted maybe 20 minutes trying to find guys to finish quests.

Whenever I try to enchant it seems to reduce the effectiveness of my smithing-improved items. Is that because I’m using shitty gems and have a very low enchant skill (my guy is totally focused on stealth and archery) or does enchanting an improved item remove its “fine” status?

Clairvoyance! Has saved me a bit of time.

Anyone seen the Headless Horseman riding the roads of Skyrim at night? Saw him just west of Whiterun. Dunno if he’s an easter egg or quest related.

Also guys; spoiler tags - I don’t wanna know the end of the Companion line unless I see it myself. Not cool.
