You know, I have come to the conclusion that I’m not going to train lockpicking. I’m patient enough that as long as I make sure I have enough lockpicks, I can open a Master-level lock. And when I stopped to look at what perks I was looking for by leveling the skill, I didn’t see any I wanted. And now that I’ve mastered pickpocketing, there are still several perks on that tree that are not at all interesting to me.
Along that note: is there a way to respec your talent points, or do you have to create a new character?
Just bought this.
I’m finding it surprisingly sluggish on my system.
Is there a way to check my fps?
Fraps for fps.
Mine was sluggish at first start but after I restarted the game it runs fine. /shrug
I don’t know if there’s an official way to do so, but on the PC version you can use the console commands to add and remove perks from your character (much like in the recent Fallout games). For instance, if you took the first rank of Bone Breaker but later decided that you’d rather have Bladesman, you could type in…
player.removeperk 0005f592
…to remove the Bone Breaker perk, and then…
player.addperk 0005f56f
…to add the Bladesman perk. Note that these codes don’t affect your number of talent points. You could give yourself all of the perks if you wanted to cheat, but IMO swapping one for one isn’t really cheating (and is much more convenient than starting over). Each perk has a code number, and if you can’t find it on the wiki, you can try using the console itself to find it. You can type in…
help “Bone Breaker” 0
…to find a list of perks, items, etc. that contain the word in quotes. Single-word terms don’t need quotes, multi-word terms do need quotes. Also, be aware that perks with multiple ranks have a different code number for each rank of that perk (this is different than in the recent Fallout games). The line above should give you several numbers, each corresponding to a different rank of Bone Breaker.
Fun fact: The first rank of most multi-rank perks has a code number much different from those of the other ranks (which are usually very similar). It looks to me like the designers originally made every perk single-rank, then added new ranks to various perks in a later build.
Anyone got married yet? You need the Amulet of Mara from the temple in Riften.
Personally I’m waiting for a mod to make Lisette, the bard in Solitude’s Winking Skeever, marryable.
Mine auto-detected Ultra settings but that was overly optimistic. Put it on Medium or High, and possibly lower the resolution. Between that and the mouse lagginess I was not too happy with Skyrim initially.
Look at these tweaks, especially all the mouse ones: Steam Community :: Discussions
Fun Moment (not a spoiler really but I want to be considerate):
I fast traveled to the West Tower on my way to somewhere else to find a dragon flying over the tower (not the scripted fight you have there; I did that one, this was my second encounter with a dragon in the game). So I am firing Lightning at the Dragon and it lands in the distance on a small mound near the tower and even though I did not do anything, it proceeds to die.
Puzzling but “Huzzah!”, I think, “Free Dragon!”. So I rush towards the mound to climb it and loot the corpse and as I go around it to find a way up, I find myself face to face with an an angry Giant. He immediately smashes me into paste with one swing of his club (possibly yelling “My Dragon!” in Giantese, I don’t know :).
In a lot of games I would have been pissed but in this one I couldn’t stop smiling.
Thanks. I was starting to suspect it was overestimating my GPU. It’s a 550ti, which is probably not up for Ultra. Too bad.
I always put the bulk of my points into save scumming (unless the game is a Roguelike…) This game, and Oblivion and the Fallouts make this harder though by randomly placing the “sweet spot” in a different place each time you search.
Lockpicking, and a few others like Alchemy, has perks that are of questionable utility. I think you could probably become proficient at many of these without investing.
Wait for the mod. I looked and couldn’t find one, but it will come soon. If you’re not on PC, then this probably isn’t possible.
tdt console command worked in Oblivion, but looks like 3rd party programs are your best bet now.
Yeah, they don’t make save scumming a pain at all, for my money. If I advance in Lockpicking, what the hell, but it’s not a goal.
I do not, however, regret the perks I invested in Pickpocketing. I now know what is best in life:
- To sneak up on your enemies.
- To strip them completely of weapons and armor.
- To back up and sneak-attack them with poisoned arrows.
I’m starting to run into some pretty tough fights. This may be due to me never taking along companions as I prefer to do it alone. If they continue to get tougher then I may have to start bring one along. Didn’t realise you could get them to carry things, at least I’ll be able to get more loot out of dungeons!
Yeah. I think there’s may be some randomness/bugs in the detection procedures. A friend has the same setup as me (i5 Quad with a 5770, except he has two of them, not yet supported but still) and I got an “Ultra” recommendation whereas he got “High”. Not even “Very High”, just “High”.
And Ultra is sluggish. I’ve put it down to “Very High”, turn off normal AA and put on that other one (WXAA?). Seems pretty good now.
I’m the same, although my reason is more that I find their AI irritating as they only get in the way. It was the same in both FO3 and FONV. It doesn’t help that I am playing in a mage stylee with next to no armour.
I just encountered one of the weirdest bugs I’ve ever experienced in any game, ever.
I was given a quest to kill a dragon. Nothing strange there, but whenever I came too near to said dragon, it would instantly “die”. Even if I didn’t attack it, it’s flesh would instantly start burning off and I would absorb it’s soul. Problem with this, however, is that it wasn’t really dead. No, it had now become an immortal, skeletal dragon. It continued attacking me as a normal dragon would, except that now (because it was already “dead”) none of my attacks would do any damage to it. The console “kill” command had no effect on it either.
The only way I was able to finally kill the dragon and complete the quest was to slowly shoot it out of the air, running away to maintain a fair amount of distance at all times.
I haven’t seen any other mentions of this bug (there’s a semi-famous YouTube video with a skeletal dragon, but that one isn’t immortal). The only thing that I can imagine causing this is that the game is confused because I already killed a dragon at that same location.
One of the annoying things I’ve had thus far is that when you get off your horse to go into combat, sometimes your horse wanders away…and sometimes a long way away. Obviously you can get your horse back by “fast-travelling” to a place you’re already at, but there should be some way to ground-tie the guy.
That’s no bug, that’s awesome!
ok, really annoying but the idea of a dracolich roaming the northern wastes is too good to ignore.
Yeah I spent half the night hunting for my horse. Some of my first mods will be less aggressive horses and no wandering horses.
It’s also hilarious to go into battle against three foes and see that you are engaging one foe, your companion another, and your horse is gamely attacking the third with his forehooves.
I love this game, but my one small complaint is that you still can’t fight on horseback. I just ignore the horses in the game, but it would be cool to have had horseback combat.
