I had that happen. Finally I zombied the guy and killed him again. It didn’t say complete, and the arrow didn’t disappear, but when I talked to the giver again the turn in reponse was active.
Not all (if any) console commands will disable achievements. I use ‘fov’ and ‘savegame’ all the time and many other people on the PCG comments section are saying they use the console for other commands and still get achievements.
In fact, some people have experimented by using the console to give themselves a ton of gold or a high level, they got the respective achievements straight after…
Yeah, that happened to me very early on. I spoke to the Jarl in Whiterun and his advisor told me to go clear out this cavern and retrieve a nord artifact… which I already had.
I have to say though this concern has kept me from exploring some random caves and forts as I run across them. 99% time I know it doesn’t matter, but I’m always worried about breaking a sidequest later on down the line.
On a related question I’m curious about something…
I’ve just ventured into Riften for the first time, and everyone’s talking about the thieves guild, and I’m here on a quest related to the Dark Brotherhood. I’ve spoken to the boy in Windhelm attempting to contact an assassin after his mother died and he’s asking me to kill an orphanage keeper. Let’s say I’m playing a goody two shoes at this point and I’m not actually interested in joining either. Is there any point contacting either just to expose them? Does the game give you that option, to betray them from the inside out? Or should I just ignore them if I don’t intend on doing their guild quests?
Given the level of freedom I’ve seen at this point I’m very curious about this.

I’m not sure about the Thieve’s Guild but I’m pretty sure with the Dark Brotherhood if you wind up killing granny and then REJECT the offer to join the family you’re given a quest to wipe them out.
You can’t “expose” the groups or anything like that.*
Crap. Can a mod change my * to a
?
Just finished the main quest.
Felt a bit…underwhelming and shorter than I’d like. If I’d have focused on the MQ I’d have polished it off in a few short hours. Plus, where’s my fanfare? I few dead Nords cheering?
Alduin also died rather quickly, both times. My legendary Daedric sword, +100 base damage plus 50 fire and 50 absorb health sent that world eater scurrying for the hills. Maybe my fault for semi-exploiting the crafting system, but still. Also getting a bit bored of blasting draugr by now.
Speaking of the craft system, if you have the ingredients/apparel/skill/patience you can bounce enchant (fortify alchemy) and alchemy (fortify enchantment) off each other infinitely. Like the enchant exploit in Morrowind, you can utterly break the game if you’re so inclined. Mages in particular; enchant four pieces with -25% spell cost and go nuts with all the master spells you want.
Still a great game though. Now just have to decide between Legion and Stormcloak. Whichever hurts the Thalmor more…although the Thalmor don’t seem to want either to win, judging by their dossiers.
Anyone getting close to the level cap yet? I’m in the mid 30’s ATM and it seems like there is still tons to do in the game. I doubt I’ve explored half of the map yet and less than half of the various dungeons, towers, mounds, forts, etc etc.

I was reading up on the game (still not convinced I want to shell out for it, Oblivion burned me pretty hard), and one guy from the SomethingAwful forums posted something hilarious that I just have to share.
A player was fucking around with the physics engine for no better reason than the lulz. Out of whimsy, he stuck bucket and kegs on top of a handful of merchants’ heads - since he was just manipulating either neutral or owned items, and he didn’t throw them, it didn’t count as an aggressive move. But apparently, Skyrim’s physics engine is a bit more evolved than the Oblivion/Fallout one, and physical objects now impede LOS. So these embucketed merchants couldn’t see. So the player could rob the stores for all their worth without raising the alarm. Because the merchants had buckets on their heads.
I’ll second his reaction to this turn of events: this might be the greatest game ever.
I read that they didn’t really design a hard cap, but leveling is supposed to really slow down around the 50s.
I’m just going to say it: This is the greatest game I’ve played in my entire life. It’s so pretty. It’s so violent. There’s so much to do. I’m in the low- to mid-forties in terms of level (and I’ve logged 43 hours of play time) and I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. There are entire towns I’m avoiding because otherwise it’s just too much content. I love this game.
I heard that at some point (81?) you can no longer level because you have 100 in each skill.
Back in the days of Morrowind, I carefully managed my leveling to maximize my stat raises, and having raised multiple characters from the ground up, I found I generally hit about 77th level or something like that by the time all my attributes were at 100.
Do you like 2-handed weapons? Because if so, there’s a perk in the 2H-weapon tree you won’t want to miss that gives you a chance at causing a decapitation. I got all giddy when I saw that. ![]()
And in the one-handed tree as well, “Savage Strike”.
That sounds about right, but Morrowind had that crazy byzantine skill system where minor skills counted less (I think approximately half, but couldn’t say for sure.) for the purposes of levelling up, so that would tend to hold things back a bit. Now that all skills are valued equally it ought to be possible to get a few more levels out of it before maxing out, and I’ve also noticed that levels come a lot more easily this time around since they are not dependent on a handful of skills.
If it still works the same as Oblvion (and Morrowind… and Daggerfall, now that I think about it): get yourself thrown in jail for a long time to cause skill decay. Problem solved.
Anyone else having problems using invisibility? Enemies still seem to be able to hit me, whether it’s in melee or with projectiles. I use boots that muffle my footsteps.
One of the loading screen blurbs seemed to imply that you won’t lose a skill level, but you will lose what progress you have toward the next level if you go to jail.
Ok, are there drain/damage (stat) on self spells/enchantments? I can’t say I’ve noticed. The key here was to temporarily lower a stat below 100, then talk to a trainer.
I assume it’s the same issue with stealth. Moving silently isn’t just a case of removing your boots, all your armour is included in the calculation. It’s based on the weight of the armour, if can reduce the weight to 0 through perks then you’ll have a lot more success.
