Gods know. When I was younger I could (and often did) stay up all night drinking with my friends, then work a full day, then go back out and do it all over again. Now I’m lucky if I can manage to stay up until midnight waiting for a game to unlock. Ah…to be young again!
(my past experience has been amazement at how long some decrypts take…and I have a fairly speedy machine…although I suspect there is the watching a pot waiting for it to boil thing going on too)
I was torn about it (I don’t have that much vacation time left), but I decided. I’m taking tomorrow off to enjoy me some Skyrim.
It was 3:30 PM. I was still agonizing over whether to burn a precious remaining vacation day on a video game, and my boss came up to me, unprompted (I hadn’t said anything about the game to anyone at work) and asked, “Hey, I saw a commercial for a game that looked pretty neat. Funny name, I can’t remember it. It looked kinda like Vikings vs. a dragon. I just remember 11.11.2011. That’s tomorrow. Do you know what game that is? It looked really cool.”
If that’s not a sign from heaven, I don’t know what is.
I didn’t pre-order, and I want a physical copy, so I’ll pick it up tomorrow. I was kinda surprised to see the Best Buy near me is having a midnight launch in about 25 minutes for Skyrim and Deathly Hallows, but I just got home after a dinner with friends and I’m probably one drink past where I’d feel comfortable driving. So tomorrow it is, and it’s going to be epic.
Gonna hop in a few. So far, I’ve created a character and played for about an hour. Impressed with the graphics, much better than I thought they would be.
Decryption only took a few minutes for me. I made my first character, a male Argonian named Hunts-In-Silence. Impressions so far in no particular order:
[ul]
[li]A very pretty game.[/li]
[li]Stealing is somewhat too easy.[/li]
[li]So far it’s less buggy than I expected; or perhaps I’ve just been lucky. [/li]
[li]I’ve had a serious relapse of Oblivion’s “harvest every plant you come across” syndrome.[/li]
[li]The mouse & keyboard control method feels a little clunky, but not as bad as some people have been claiming.[/li]
[li]Where can we get a manual?! I can’t find one, and the Bethesda forums have multiple people asking where they can find one.[/li][/ul]
Errrgg. I did the Amazon release-day thing, and UPS tracking says it is “out for delivery”, so it is on the truck, cruising aimlessly around north Atlanta. I really really considered taking the day off, but knowing it probably won’t get delivered until early afternoon anyway, I’ve put on my brave face and will fake-work at the office, visions of flame-bolts dancing in my head.
Either I got robbed, or it’s a paper map. I was really looking forward to the cloth map (who am I kidding…our kitten would have stolen it and used it as a blanket).
Not reading any of this thread because I have to teach a class in five minutes, then work until 5. I will be able to load the game on my personal/work laptop here while I work on the other computer, though.
So far I’m loving it. Of course, I’m getting NO work done today, and having a husband telling me “hey, you’ve been working & worrying too much lately… you SHOULD take the day off and play all day!” isn’t helping.
A couple questions:
has anyone figured out how to position the camera so you can see your character yet? I can switch from first person to third person view, but haven’t figured out what magic combo of keys makes it so I can rotate the camera so I can see what I look like from the front.
How about quickly switching from bow to melee weapon in battle? I can laboriously tab through my inventory and switch, but I’m hoping there’s a faster way.
You can also use F (default) to toggle between first and third person – holding down F will allow the camera to rotate via the mouse, but it’s crazy weird to control.
