To select weapons in battle I select the weapons gropu in weapons then jus hit the ‘q’ key to get a menu of your favorites. I have an imperial long bow, sword/axe, axe/fire destruction, dual destruction/fire and fire/healing. I want to do a weapon/healing one as well.
The game is great out of the box. Absolutely zero issues so far with bugs. Game play is good, but as I feared a bit fast paced for melee…really need VATS for me anyway. The world is just stunningly beautiful and the game is running at the ultra high graphics settings without a hitch. I STILL can’t play Rage, but this game is perfect, so far.
Was up until 4am my time, and am up early to continue the explore. I made it to 5th level last night. Finally found what I guess is a dungeon (haven’t done any of the quests yet)…Rannveig’s Fast. Might be too high for me. Just found it before I realized it was after 4am and I needed sleep (I literally hadn’t noticed the time while playing). I also found some cool ruins and a place called Bloated Man’s Grotto, but some sort of wood demon killed me so figured it’s too high for the likes of me.
I don’t know how to optimize my character, so have put points into magic, stam and health pretty evenly so far. For perks I put stuff in the bow, destruction, one handed and lock pick
The game is a lot like Fallout 3/NV, but the controls are a bit different. The ‘q’ button, as mentioned, is for favorite weapons. ‘c’ is now for auto run. You can dual wield spells as well as weapons.
Still, luckily, haven’t seen a dragon outside of the opening sequences. Planning to play. Through most of the day, just exploring around and finding new places. Anyone doing the quests? Are they worth bothering with?
How is combat in third person like? I do not really like FPS and first-person style combat, so I am wondering if it is better in Skyrim than in Oblivion.
Go into the inventory, select the item/spell & press F, to add it to the favorites list.
Exit the inventory, press Q to open the favorites list, left click for right hand, right click for left hand. You can also press a number key (NOT on the keypad, though) to quickslot the selection.
Quite a few reviews I’ve seen incorrectly complain that you can’t do so.
Pretty much agree on all counts although I got busted trying to steal ASAP. Later I was trying to sneak around and the inn keeper bolted upstairs and now will not leave my side (I didn’t do anything wrong…he’s just watching me like a hawk).
I had one CTD early on (and it was the cleanest CTD I have ever seen…just poof and the game was gone and I was staring at my desktop). Only happened the once though and has been running like a champ since.
I agree with the picking flowers thing. I just cannot walk by a plant I can pick without picking it because I feel if I don’t I will surely regret it later. That task frankly gets a bit tedious. Hope someone will make an auto-pick mod or something that harvests automatically anytime you are within a few feet of a plant.
I sort of see how this works, but I’m having a heck of a time switching from bow to sword.
I open up inventory, press F to favorite both the bow and the sword. Then I equip one, close inventory. Hit the Q key, great! They both show up. If I hover over one of them, I can hit a number and apparently assign that number to that item. So I do that - 1 is my bow, 2 is my sword. I see that on the screen.
Close the Q menu. I’m holding my bow. I hit 2, wuwu, I switch to sword. I hit 1, nothing happens. No bow. If I hit 2 again, I cycle through fist to sword.
WTF? How do I easily go from sword to bow to sword to bow?
I had been finding the game fairly easy so far (playing on Expert which is one notch above normal or “adept”), and then I can my butt handed to me by an undead warrior who wields sword and then suddenly surprised me with an ice beam.
You know it’s a great game when you find dying enjoyable!
Anyone else notice people now try and take cover from your arrows, instead of just standing there waiting to die?
They actually do pretty well dodging my arrows…better than I’m doing dodging theirs. Basically archery is most effective when you sneak up behind them and shoot them in the back. Gotten several one shot kills that way. What I do is shoot from stealth and then fire as they come in, then switch to one handed Orc axe and fire detruction to finish them off. Has worked pretty well. Some ranged guys you can sit back and duel with, but I usually end up missing about half my shots as they duck around.
I *think *where you’re messing up is the hovering part. Select your sword & shield or whatever, *then *hit 1. Not 100% sure though - I’ll experiment a bit when I get home.
I get the assignment right - at least, it puts a 1 in front of the item I’m hovering over. It’s using it that’s the problem. I’m assuming that when the Q menu is closed, I oughta be able to press 1 or 2 or whatever to equip those items, and it’s not working.
Wait as Steam insists I need to download a 4GB patch before I can play which at the current rate will take an hour and a half.
Right now I am so glad I got this on PC instead of 360 or PS3.
One of the things that drop me up a wall about Oblivion is the entire world leveled up with you. As you got more powerful, so did everything in the game. So going back to the beginning city, the caves that were previously filled with low level enemies now had the same things you fought everywhere else.
Can anyone speak to how this goes with Skyrim? I know it’s early in release, but I can’t exactly go on the steam forums and ask
Amanset, try changing your download region. Go to steam, settings, downloads + clouds, and pick a different region, and one of them will cure that message.
Skyrim is surprisingly huge on steam at the moment with over 200k people playing it right now, which is crushing MW3 which surprises me.
I had a problem installing the game–wondering if anyone else did. The Skyrim install couldn’t connect to the Steam launcher program. I had to completely reinstall the Steam launcher for it to connect.
But it’s downloading now…only one hour until I can actually get out of work and create a character.
Nope, no problems here. Everything went off without a hitch, and still haven’t run into any major issues. There is something weird with the favorites thingy…it doesnt save your caster spell when you go to one hand cast and one weapon, but uses the last spell you cast. I tried to set up a favorite combo for sword and fireball, two handed fireball, sword and board, sword and heal and bow, but the spells aren’t working as I expected. But it’s pretty minor. The only real issue I had was I couldn’t connect to steam this morning so had to wait for it to time out to play in offline mode. I’ll take that sort of ‘problem’ any day.
