The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

I think so. But I also think a gold diamond ring will sell for more than the sum of its parts.

I’m playing on whatever the default is. And I’m lazy - I almost always play on “normal” or even “easy” in some games, because if I have to do a fight more than about 3 times I just get pissed. But doing everything only once isn’t fun, either, I like a bit of a challenge. So yeah, maybe I’ll up the difficulty and see what that does.

I believe magic damage bypasses armor. So you need some resist boosting items/potions.

2: There is a perk which allows an alteration armor spell to be multiplied when not wearing armor.

Mage Armor (3)

Alteration 30/50/70, Apprentice Alteration

Protection spells like Stoneflesh are 2x as strong if not wearing armor (+0.5x per additional rank)

So if you cast ebonyflesh and have 3x multiplier, you would have an armor rating of 300 while not wearing any actual armor.

QUESTION: What’s the multiplier effect on dual casting? For example, if I cast a dual firebolt, is it 2x as strong or more than that? If I dual cast ironflesh, is it 2x as strong or more than that?

Yep…that’s what I spend the majority of my coin on. I’ve yet to find anything worth buying at a vendor. I’m still wearing a combination of armor given to me at the thieves guild and stuff I’ve picked up along the way. My de ail minion is wearing full plate I got off of some boss mob and a shield I got on the werewolf quest line and sword I got early in the game which is still the best on handed weapon I’ve found. I am using a souled up elven bow I found somewhere (plus 20 fire damage).

I don’t think that’s quite how it works, it seems to add bonus effects to the spell instead. A dual fireball will cause the unfortunate recipient to stagger, as far as I’ve read, so I guess that would be about the same result as a shield bash.

If you take the perk for it, it will stagger the foe*. Otherwise, what’s the effect?
*Tremendously useful perk. If you use magic, this is a no-brainer.

Oh, that’s a separate perk. It’s a jungle in there, but I did find someone who has apparently crunched the numbers, and frankly without the bonus effects it hardly seems worth getting. http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=26133

Well I had just reloaded a previous save as my exploring led me extremely off my path and Lydia got stuck. I load put me on a road following some Justicars (I saved before I thought they’d be good/bad). I started making my way past them and stopped to stick an arrow in a wolf. When I turned back to the path I see a ghostly figure on a horse running toward me. I instictively try to go stealth and then realize, doh, I’m in the middle of the damn road with no cover, I’m dumb. There’s something strange about this rider though. As he gets closer I notice…that he has no head! Lol, the headless horseman gallops past me and off into the distance. I nearly crapped my pants when I saw this ethereal horse and rider heading my way in the dead of night.

God I love this game. 2 a.m., time for bed.

On another note, I found M’Aiq the Liar under a tree near the Blackbriar estate. He says a few choice quotes before getting grumpy and refusing to talk. What he said to me (I assume random) wasn’t as interesting as previous games.

Are dragon attacks unavoidable or did I just become the unlucky guy who wandered under his flightpath?
I was hunting elk right outside a city when I heard the roar and the music kicked in. I tried stealthing, but he stayed on my screen. He flew a ways passed me, landed, attacked something in the distance and then started walking my way like I was visible to whole time. I barely made it alive. Thankfully he took off to do a few circles and the guards near the city caught his attention. Together, well mostly them, we killed it and I got the loots. I guess at lvl 7, I thought I might have been able to handle myself better, but he owned the hell out of me.

He wanders. I’ve seen him in two different places on the same character.

There is also a bard who wanders about. I assume he teaches speechcraft.

There is a Kajiit trader who camps in front of Whiterun, who wasn’t there later when I went back looking for him. Does he go to other towns?

Yeah, I’ve run into the khajiit trader in a few places during my travels. I think he is always at Whiterun the first time your character meets him and then he wanders.

There have been plenty of times where a dragon flys overhead without attacking me. Including some times where I wanted to fight it but I couldn’t get it to come close enough.

There are several groups of khajiit merchants I believe, and they all move around. Some are involved in quests and based on the markers that appear on the map when you’re in those quests, they actually walk along the roads between towns too.

I get the impression that the Khajiits are camped outside of towns because the guards won’t let them inside the towns. I think that’s a theme of the game, that the towns are racist towards them.

Well remember that in Whiterun the guards almost wouldn’t let YOU in and only did because you had business with the Jarl. When you tell the Jarl’s dumner captain about the dragon she says “ah, no wonder they let you inside.”

So, I have a funny story/screenshot, but it’s a spoiler if you haven’t completed the Dark Brotherhood quest series:

I got to the point where you have to kill the traitorous jester, Cicero, and as he begged for his life I decided not to show mercy. And just my luck, I got a decapitation on the killing blow! But as his head rolled off in one direction, his jester hat stayed in place on the phantom head as his body slumped to the floor. Screenshot.

Well, it was funny to me anyways.

Yeah, it’s funny about dragon attacks. Sometimes when you really want to kill one (like when you have a new shout to learn and you don’t have any dragon souls available) you can’t get them to come down and fight, no matter what you do. It seems that sometimes they are actively hunting (I’ve seen them go after everything from animals to people in town) and if you can catch them on the ground and start engaging them they will fight. Sometimes they are actually coming after you, specifically. And sometimes they are just seemingly flying about at random and no matter what you do they just ignore you. It actually makes the game more realistic that the dragons act in so random a manner, though it can be frustrating when you really want to kill one of the beasties.

I must have missed him in Whiterun, hope I find him.

ETA: Re: Dragons: I had a situation at least once where I fast traveled to an area, had a dragon overhead I blasted him a few times and he flew off and never came back.
