The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

Well, as for the quests you can just click off all the ones you don’t want to do. I actually usually only have one quest active now that I figured that out and it really helps.

If you are high level and want to go Mage then you are probably out of luck, unless someone has a respec mod out. My char isn’t optimal…I have points in perks I don’t use now, like one handed. But…I’m not out to optimize my char to the nth degree, personally. I am also in this for the long haul, and since there doesnt seem to be a level cap I figure that I can always add skills if I want too. Case in point…based on this thread I started putting points in my smithing skill and buying iron ingots and making leather from all the cave critters that are always attacking me. I figure I’ll have to get to the high 40s to get all the perks there I want, but what the he’ll. :stuck_out_tongue:

As I understand it, critters are set to a level range, and are adjusted to the nearest level to you within that range. So if you, say, run into a level 30-40 range critter when you are level 15, it’ll be at level 30; if you run into it at 35, it’ll be 35; and if you run into it at level 50 it’ll be 40.

Really late to the party, but I finally picked up Skyrim… Great game so far! I’ll tell some stories when I’m not playing it, but right now I have a super-random question: Wuuferth the Unliving, the castle mage in the Stormcloak capitol, has a voice that sounds very very familiar. I finally figured out that he sounds like the guard from the beginning of Disney’s Aladdin, but I’m not sure if I’m right… anyone know?

Missed edit window… I couldn’t find out who voiced this minor character, so I realized I should work my way backwards. Turns out Jim Cumings did do voice work for Skyrim, but he isn’t listed as being this particular actor. I think Wikipedia is wrong, though; I didn’t recognize him in his other roles, but I definitely recognized him here.

I don’t specifically remember noticing him as the wizard, but I do recall noticing his voice. It also comes up sometimes in The Clone Wars. My ears prick up: Minsc!

As much as I hate for that one guy not to fill the role for Bethesda that he’s done for a decade at least, I was really glad not to hear that one guy that did nearly every voice in Morrowind and Oblivion.

Well, I’m making plenty of money by crafting, but I’m spending it all on training sessions instead of saving up for a house. All my crafting to make money raises my levels quickly, leaving me little time to raise my combat skills naturally. I’m kind of stuck in a craft/sell/train/level-up cycle (I’m level 21). Hopefully I’ll hit a tipping point where I’ll be making enough to put a llittle aside for a house.

So far, my must-have perks are Merchants Buy Anything and 3x Unseen Bow Shot Damage. Gotta get through the lower “toll” perks to get them though.

Ideas for mods I’d like to see (on this great game):

  1. Toggleable on-screen clock in the lower corner. It’s so overcast that even during the day, there’s few visual cues that night’s coming.

  2. Stat showing number of times I’ve trained on my current level. I’m leveling so fast that I forget if I’ve trained already and have to go ask a trainer to train me just to see if I’ve already done that, unless I’m missing something.

  3. Tags on stolen items. I didn’t like them at first in Oblivion, but they were useful for inventory management. Or maybe carryable knapsacks that I can just throw all my stolen loot in to keep it seperate from the honest stuff.

Pretty sure they show up in inventory as red. At least, I have a few items in red that the only real explanation for is that they’re stolen.

They show up as red in chests, but only have the easy-to-miss “Stolen” tag when being carried.

Thanks, I’ll look for the tag. I’m close to joining the thieves’ guild, so hopefully I can start selling this stuff soon.

A very important note : when you’re carrying around several identical items, and one of them has been stolen, if you’re arrested, the guards will keep all the items.

I discovered that when after offering to pay a 5 gold fine, I was deprived of allmy money (about 10 K gold) after the arrest. After reloading, putting the gold in a chest and checking, it turned out I had 5 stolen gold coins. I surrendered again, but this time with only the 5 stolen coins (in order to get rid of those) and 5 more gold for the fine.

And I never noticed the “stolen tag”. I’m going to look for it in my next session. Even though I’m using the (very convenient) inventory mod I forgot the name of, so maybe the tag doesn’t appear (note that confiscated gold problem I mentioned above happened before I installed any mod, so it’s a core game issue).

I don’t know if you must join or not. You can definitely go to the Ragged Flagon, but it’s unclear if the vendor will help you.

Stormcloak all the way, baby. Granted I don’t buy into the Skyrim-for-Nords philosophy, I can’t side with the outside empire that’s repressing the local culture. I don’t personally like Ulfric but the Empire has been, in my opinion, far too eager to repress and control and far too unwilling to accommodate. Giving away religious freedom as a bargaining chip in a treaty negotiation is completely unacceptable. Skyrim should govern itself, and I’m willing to throw my lot in with the Stormcloaks to make that happen even if I don’t agree with their methods – though I can’t characterize it as ethnic cleansing at least based on what I’ve observed so far. Surely they are suspicious of non-Nords, but they’re accepting them into their ranks, and all of their “Yay Nords” tribalism is a pretty natural response to oppression. Once the Empire’s out, there’s no reason to be so extreme, and things will settle down out of necessity.

To me, it’s Gauls v Romans and I’ll side with the Gauls every time.

That’s exactly what they said about the Nazis, too.

Oh, come on now. The Stormcloaks aren’t Nazis. Firstly, they’re not for invading anyone else. They aren’t ethnically cleansing. They’re not putting anyone in camps. They have racist elements – sure. So do both sides. Hell, so does practically every major organization or nation on Nirn. Skyrim, Morrowind, Cyrodil - they’re all deeply racist places. Ask the Khajit; ask the Argonians. Casual racism is part and parcel of the world as it is.

Actions speak loudest: the Stormcloaks are openly accepting all races into their ranks. Ulfric is an arrogant, ambitious politician, but he’s not a monster; he doesn’t really care about racial politics. When he starts taking over cities, does he start executing foreigners? No, he wants to win the war, and wants to be High King, and wants the Empire out. If waving the flag a bit does that, then great. It’s no different than what Britain or the US did during WWII and neither have any problems today with the ‘krauts’ or the ‘japs’. Like I said, I don’t love it, but I’m not going to come down on the Empire’s side on this one. If the Empire treated the Nords equitably, this rebellion never would have happened. People should govern themselves, not be ruled by foreign empires who are willing to trade away their deepest cultural traditions as a bargaining advantage.

I’m playing the same king of guy (and I’m also level 30), except with some enchanting, crafting and alchemy, making my bows (I have several, one of them being a very convenient “steal soul” bow) even more deadly, and it’s indeed a piece of cake at this point. Bosses normally can’t see me in a dungeon (too dark) except if I shoot them at very close range. So, a typical dungeon is “look around, shoot and kill, pick up loot, go to next room/tunnel”. It was a bit difficult at the beginning, though, since I was lacking both combat and magic skills. Fleeing if I could was often my best option then.

On the other hand, I’ve spent the last ten levels or so cleaning up all the quests that were clogging up my diary, including some I was probably expected to do at the beginning (I only recently completed the first quest for the companions and greybeards for instance), so maybe it’s easier than it should be.

Anyway, it’s for the better, since I hate being killed and having to reload, feeling it as a major failure. Also, since it’s my first character, I don’t know if it would be any different if I were an equally talented fighter, mage or whatever. I guess they might be equally lethal in their own ways (I’m picturing a mage standing peacefully in a corner, looking his summoned creatures fighting for him and burning to death anything that seems a bit resilient, for instance).

This being in part a result of the Oblivion’s style of ennemy leveling with you that I hated, I vastly prefer this game.

I’m pretty sure that the Imperials accept any race (the player chooses to play) into their ranks, too.

By the way, a question :

Is it confirmed that companions don’t level up at all? I’m asking because Lydia seems to be able to some limited extent to stand her ground, and I’ve been with her since very early in the game. Do the high-end stuff she’s wearing/using enough to explain it?

Also, is there a way to know what her (or other companion’s) skills are? And do they have perks? I’m asking because I’m unsure about what stuff I should give her, given that the way she picks her equipment doesn’t seem consistent (or even sensible, sometimes prefering a non-enchanted armor over its identical enchanted counterpart, or choosing a mage-friendly item completely useless for her).

I wouldn’t know, but since I’ve already witnessed two executions (including one where I was to take a lead role), I’m not inclined to ask and I couldn’t care less about who they accept or not. A good imperial is a dead imperial, IMO (and I make sure to put my arrows where my mouth is).
Now, it’s not a racist statement. I’ve nothing against them as individuals, and even have been on friendly terms with a couple of them who were nice guys. If they would just leave us alone to solve their own problems at home with those fucking elves, I’d be happy to let them leave.

  1. Well, you can push “T.”

  2. Followup question, maybe answered below. I have a red stack of 21 amethysts. I am pretty sure they are not all stolen. If I take one out and commit a crime, and repeat 20 more times, will each one be confiscated? Any way to “clean” them?
Re: Stormcloaks. All I had to do was go to Windhelm to know that Ulfric was interested in ghettoization and ethnic cleansing. I am also confused on what the Empire specifically did to Skyrim. Granted, Talos was a Nord, but he was usually the chief or secondary of the Nine Divines in every province, especially Cyrodiil and High Rock. It isn’t like it was necessarily intended as a direct crack against the Nords, but knowing the Thalamor’s Machiavellian schemes, who knows.

I faced one of these named Krosis at level 13. The firs time I died hard because I had just finished a fight with a dragon and didn’t expect a second fight so soon. It took me at least 8 or so attempts but I beat him. Used a lot of potions (healing, Magicka and Resist Fire) and I found he seemed to take more damage from Ice than anything else but I finally won.
