The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

I didn’t check, but I’m sure early levels are quicker and later ones are tougher.

Edit: In my new game, I think I levelled after only 4 skill-ups.

Yeah, it definitely takes more skill-raises to increase a level later on. I haven’t found out the scale, or even kept track through a whole level, but I can definitely see that after 5 skill raises from a trainer I don’t get anywhere near halfway to the next level.

An amusing detail/Easter Egg I found in the far northwest while traveling to Ysgramor’s Tomb; a mammoth frozen into the side of a glacier.

I just had what felt like an epic moment. My female Nord two-handed specialist finished the main Companion questline and (spoilered for those who haven’t finished it)

Having become Harbinger and acquired Ysgramor’s battleaxe Wuuthrad (which does double damage against elves), the very first thing she does is finish off a quest that involved rescuing a fellow Nord held in a secret prison run by the Thalmor. And forget stealth or diplomatic solutions; she’s Harbinger of the Companions and a True Nord! The Thalmor on the surface all came out in a mob, and she waded into them in a frontal assault, slaughtering them with her humongous axe while they begged for mercy and re-baptizing Wuuthrad in the blood of filthy elven invaders! Then she went down into the prison itself and massacred every last Thalmor and opened every last cell door. She probably kept a skull or two to drink mead from afterward.

Having finished Arkham City and The Third I finally got this. I am pleased with quite a lot of what they’ve done and changed (the levelling system is damn near perfect) and while there still are cases that cause raised eyebrows (ran into my first highway robber today. He was decked in Elven armour. Please please please tell me there’s not going to be Daedric Bandits again ?) I’m having a ball harvesting everything everywhere all the time. Hang on giant spider ! Can’t you see there’s an interesting patch of 'shrooms here ? Be with you in a minute.

That being said, yeh fucking gods the interface. It’s like they deliberately designed it to piss me off. It’s one thing to design a console-friendly one - Oblivion had that and it wasn’t a huge deal. This one ? Lucky enough I have an USB xbox pad because yeh gods. No mouse in menus ? Who at Bethesda got stoned on turpentine enough to think that was acceptable ?
Which brings me to: is there a mod to make it palatable to play with a mouse+keyboard because my aim with a thumbstick sucks ?

On a similar note, if I want to play it on PC with a console controller, will the keyboard + un-modded game allow me to key map favorite items so I don’t have to pause a fight to change weapons or spells?

Never mind. My Skyrim Gaming Guide just arrived, and answered my question. It says I can assign the number keys 1 through 8 as hotkeys on the PC. I’d like more, but eight will be enough for a start.

I’m sure there will be a mod out to add more hot keys. For Oblivion there was a mod that added alt + 1-8 and ctrl + 1-8 for a total of 24 hot keys. It woudl come in handy for keeping shouts, spells and weapons straight.

Actually, he looked into the camera and held up a little sign that said “Yikes!” Then I hit him with dual cast fireballs and he turned into a pile of ash, except for his eyes which blinked a couple of times.

I might have misremembered some of that.

The Guide says on page 10 that it takes more reps to increase a skill level at higher skill numbers, but that increasing a skill level counts more towards leveling up, the higer the skill number. So raising a skill from 40 to 41 takes more reps than raising from 20 to 21, but it will take you further towards the next level than raising it from 20 to 21. Makes sense.

Yes, I wondered about that. It had a bunch of dwarven arrows and spears in it, which made me wonder what exactly happened there. And the trunk was still fresh enough to eat…

I love killing Thalmor. Doesn’t matter what side you’re on, killing Thalmor is the most wonderful feeling!

Has anyone ever tried to get a pet dog? Are they any good in fights or do they go down fairly quick?
I happened across Barbas and picked him up as part of his questline. I haven’t completely his quests and have been just dragging him and Lydia around wherever I go. It’s been great because the dog cannot die and he immediately grabs the attention of any foe in our path. I’ve only seen him on three occassions tuck his tail and run for cover (assumingly to regen health though I’ve never seen a health bar for him). I think I might be taking advantage of this little bug though.

You can push “F” on an item in your inventory to add it to your favorites, which holds a lot of items/spells, etc (near infinite?). Then push “Q” to pull it up outside of the menu and click to choose an item there. In that menu, you can push 1-8 to hotkey further.

The only mod I want is one that either allows you to 1) hotkey it so 1 is a sword in your right hand and 2 is an axe in your right hand, or 2) hotkey 1 that pulls out both weapons at once. The way it is now, it seems weapons always go to RH, and shields and spells always go to LH by default.

I don’t think there is a way to do this in vanilla, is there?

fork out 5k on a house then they only go and make me archmage of winterhold college, which includes accommodation!

Gotta catch 'em all! Every modern adventurer needs a pied-à-terre in every city.

But I’m sure one has weapon racks and the other doesn’t, or something…
But wait, do you mean a house in Winterhold? Is there room for anything there?

You can get a house in Winterhold if you do quests for the Jarl and then do his ‘help 5 citizens to show you are a real member of society’ thingy. I didn’t bother, since the best house, wrt convenience, is still the first house you get (I never even bother using my digs at the college, except to swing by periodically to collect all of the soul gems which seem to re-pop from time to time…and all the potions).

I just wish I could get an arcane enchanter in my house…then it would be perfect. I’m holding out for someone to do a really cool house mod so I can store all my stuff, make potions and armor and all that right from the same house. Plus a really cool display wall and mannequins to my trophy gear.

ETA: Finally got the named horse in the Brotherhood quest. Gods, that horse is a beast. I actually had it going toe to toe with an elder dragon last night…and I think the horse was winning! I can’t even tell if the horse is kill able…I’ve never seen it down (I lost 3 horses at various times in my travels before this one).

a suite in the college with alchemy bench and enchanting desk, a garden and loads of stuff.

In my experience, the only thing that kills evil, undead horses are falls from great heights. Weak ankles.

Even there it seems to be able to fall from higher heights (I fell off a cliff last night that would have killed my previous horses. Besides a whinny of distress and some accusing looks, though, Shadowmere seemed to get through without issue).

Spoiler it, if need be, but how do I get a house in Markarth?

The Jarl there tells me to talk to his chamberlain, who’s got nuthin’ to say to me.

Same thing…you have to help 5 citizens before you can buy the house. After you help the 5 citizens you get to be a noble, and then you can get a house. At least, that’s what it looked like to me…again, I didn’t bother getting a house there because it wouldn’t be as easy to access all the stuff I use as the house I already have.

(I am considering getting one of the really expensive houses eventually, assuming no one gives me the mod joy I’m looking for, simply so I can get the smithy/forge/work bench/arcane enchanter facilities I want).
