Im assuming this is in Morkath(sp?) from there being a Warrens?
Walk, ride or take a wagon to to Riften and start asking around about the Guild. I can provide more details if you want, but I’ll also spoiler-tag them.

No, but I don’t recall his name. He has a slight lowlands Scots accent if that helps.

ill go take a look. I have 3 games on the go - fighter, mage, thief, so haven’t gotten to too many places away from Whiterun yet, at least not in detail.
OK, I’m back on this after a few days off due to work/waiting for them to patch.
I’m doing the buy iron/make daggers thing to level up Smithing. But people seem to be mentioning enchanting them for extra coolness. I’m a bit confused by the enchanting malarkey. I get the disenchanting (and thus I need something with an enchant that I can put on a dagger), but I’m utterly lost with how you enchant. Something about soul stones or something?
Could I be really irritating and ask how that works?
You will need to cast soul trap on soemthing you are about to kill, and kill it whilst carrying a soul gem of the appropriate size. You can now choose an item an enchantment and a gem at the table and create an enchanted item.
In post 518 (page 11) of this thread, Jihi posts links to a file server with smithing mods for Skyrim. I downloaded a couple, and they did not seem to foul up any of my saved games.
In the descriptions of a mod recommended by the author of “Lost art of the blacksmith”, the mod allows you to upgrade (improve) some unique gear.
I can’t post links right now, sorry.
Also, when adding a variable effect (like frost damage), you will need to choose a setting.
I usually drag the slider most of the way to the left so that I don’t have to recharge that item after only a few uses, for those enchants that have charges.
Go to Riften, and well, you can’t miss it. Just go into the market during the day and it wil start.
I take it soul trap is a “normal” spell? Or? Does it have to be near death or just be in combat with it?
How does “appropriate size” work?
Sorry about all the questions, but this has been confusing me.
The Soul Trap spell is just another spell effect. If it’s active on a creature when it dies, you steal its soul into a Soul Gem. Soul Gems come in different sizes - the cheap ones can’t hold much more than a wolf or rat. You can put a weak soul in a big gem, but not a big soul into a small gem.
To enchant, you…
- Go to the Enchanter Table.
 - Select an enchantment.
 - Select an item.
 - Select a Soul Gem. Weak souls weaken the enchantment. Strong souls give it full effect.

Soul gems come in various sizes: petty, lesser, common, greater and grand.
Once you have cast the spell capture soul you have a few seconds to kill something and capture its soul. If you have a gem of the appropriate size, or larger, the soul will go into the gem. You can also find sould gems that are already filled; you can tell because the description of the soul gem will either say ‘empty,’ or have the size of the soul contained within.
Petty souls are things like skeevers, mudcrabs and goats; lesser souls are things like skeletons and draugers; common are things like trolls, greater are things like saber tooth lions and polar bears, and grand are things like dragon lords.
When you enchant you need to pick an item, an enchantment (not all enchantments are available for all item types) and a soul gem. Then you hit R to enchant.
Some weapons come with a “soul trap” ability/enchantment. It is also a player cast spell. (I think the court wizrd in Whiterun sells the spell tome.)
Most creatures have souls. (Even undead.) Some souls are “stronger” or “bigger” than others. For example, most of the wolves and skeevers I’ve come across have “petty” souls. They go from petty, to lesser, to common, to greater, to grand.
Soul gems come in these different size categories, and can hold an equal or smaller soul that you trap. (You have to kill the victim while it is under the influence of the soul trap effect to get it’s soul.) Be careful not to waste a grand gem by trapping a petty soul inside it! Some general merchandise merchants may sell soul gems, check their “MISC” catalog.
Most soul gems are consumed when used to recharge an item, or when used to create (enchant) a new item. There are a couple special soul gems that don’t get consumed, but I haven’t run across them yet.
Nope, Riften. Guy’s name is Brynjolf, he has a potion/snake oil stand on the market.

Do companions respawn? And if they do, do they keep their previous inventory?
[/QUOTE]
Companions don’t respawn, but they do keep their inventory so if you know where Lydia died, try your luck, her corpse is probably still there. Or, if you’re on the PC, open the console and type “a2c94.moveto player” to teleport Lydia directly to you. And yes, I know that alphanumerical chain by heart from the umpteen times she’s gotten stuck or lost, why do you ask ?
Actually, now that I think about it this *might *also revive her, her corpse probably has a different ID tag ![]()
Actually haven’t had any trouble with losing her, though she had died a few times…generally I just reload from my last save when I know she is with me and proceed from there. What I’ve been having trouble with lately though is the horse (Shadowmere) has been acting wonky. I thought I’d lost him for a while, since I used fast travel and he didn’t arrive with me. I was just getting ready to reload the game from an hour before when I looked down a big hill and thought I saw a black horse. Went down there and sure enough, it was him. This has happened a couple times. I’ll fast travel, look around, no horse, then walk a bit away and find him lurking out of sight.

I’ll check it out…thanks.
I’m waiting to mod for now until Steam puts in their new mod punch down system next month. I’m hoping there are some really good mods out there (one that I definitely want to get is the mod for the map, that lets you zoom all the way down to ground level…that will be cool. Also hoping for some good housing mods)

 F’in hell. That sucks* about getting screwed out of finishing the Thieves Guild recovery.
Is there a history of such gotcha crap in these games? I played Oblivion but I didn’t pay nearly as much attention to things as I am with Skyrim.
I mean, how the hell is anyone supposed to know that? A dialogue clue would have been nice at least, and I don’t recall there being one. Or the “Hey, dumbass. This is an important thingy-majig. You can’t drop/store/sell it” message. Something.
I’ve currently got a save from just before the decision of whether or not to join the Nightengales and whether or not I want to lead the Thieves Guild, and I’m wondering if I’m just going to end up just going back there to take the cool Nightengale armor and move on to something else. I’m hoping you get to keep the armor even if you don’t drink the body shot of koolaid flavored tequila from the Nocturnal’s exposed navel? I would like to see just what the full Nightengale superpowers end up being and how they jive with how I’ve been playing before I make that decision, though the big ruins to kill Mercer do look like a loooong grind to potentially do for nothing. Decisions…
- ‘sucks’ as in really the only thing I’ve encountered so far that has actually managed to pull my attention away from gorging on the awesome sauce for a few minutes.

I have no idea where Lydia died. I figured she was just “lost” and would come running back sooner or later… So I guess I have a change of stumbling across her corpse randomly and recovering my Thieves Guild armor, but I’m not hopeful (Unfortunately, I’m on XBox and can’t use console commands.)
With Shadowmere, I’ve noticed that some of the places he’s “dropped” after fast traveling can be some distance away from your character. If ever you think he’s really lost, try fast traveling to the stables outside of a city. He seems to always show up near by when I arrive at the stables.
Thanks guys for the explanations about Enchanting and soul gems. Looks like I’ll be off to buy this Soul Trap spell then …
FWIW, I’ve noticed that if you fast travel while mounted you can sometimes keep your horse closer than traveling while just standing right next to him/her but it seems to depend on the destination as to whether or not that works.
It should also be noted that pre-trapped soul gems can be bought from most magical merchants in the game. I’ve done tons of enchanting and I’ve literally never had to soul trap anything myself. The court wizard in Whiterun usually has a selection of souls for sale of varying levels and an enchanting table conveniently placed right next to him. Be aware that it can get expensive though if you go this route. Grand souls go for around 1,000 gold a piece.
I also find a number of pre-trapped gems just while wandering doing quests, usually only petty or lesser though. They don’t seem to spawn a whole lot but I usually find at least one in most dungeons/tombs/caves. The frequency seems to increase while fighting mages/necromancers. You won’t want to use petty souls on your own equipment, benefits are almost negligible, but if it’s fine if you’re just experimenting.
