The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

The last bit was bothering me on my first character - she was a proud imperialist Nord because while it might have gone a bit to the dogs since then, the Empire is still a) a Nord thing, FFS ! Our guy Talos made it ! and b) been a good thing overall, what with protecting the world from Oblivion invasions, keeping Morrowind together during the whole Nerevarine mess and so forth. Mostly she wanted the Thalmor to fuck off and the Empire to live on, so I wasn’t really comfortable with those quests that directly run against it.

My new toon has (or rather, will have - he’s still not quite out of his baby irons) no qualms with that, because he’s a Dunmer and a rotten bastard at that. Still favouring the Imperial side, but this time around it’s because he’s thoroughly down with the Thalmor. Death to those uppity men, bros ! You wouldn’t believe the way they behaved towards our ancient customs (of slavery, daedra worship and assassination) and the Tribunal and such, and we were being so welcoming of their ways, too.
Sure, in theory the Aldmeri Dominion doesn’t include Morrowind, but I figure they’ll still look more kindly on fellow mer that on anyone else. And if not, well, I got Dragon Shouts and I’m not afraid to use them.

nowhere near that high, but still doing way more damage than my mage. Of course, I may be playing the mage wrong

I don’t see numbers but it seemed to me the bar goes down more when I hit them with lightning. I freely admit I could be wrong though.

The guild is still “we steal, but don’t you dare kill anybody!” mentality. They’re not so evil. There are a few misc quests that seem to require you to join to talk to members. According to the wiki, you might be able to botch the first mission (doing no thiefly things) and still get access to their base. And if you do that one quest for Aretino, you are given the option of wiping out the DB.

I’ll raise you 30x dagger damage. (15x dagger perk, 2x gloves)

According to this Wiki page, different dragon types either resist or have a weakness to fire & cold, but take normal damage from lightning. So that’s probably what you are seeing; not so much doing more damage, but the lack of extra resistance. Since if they resist an element it’s by 50%, it isn’t surprising it’s noticeable.

Lightning is pretty much my default damage spell. Too many creatures have resistances to fire or frost, but everyone can be shocked.

Yeah, destruction magic gets pretty crazy when you coat everything you own in “X% less cost” enchants. The power curve on enchanting is off the wall in general, but for the magic cost reductions, it has an even more dramatic effect than usual. Being able to endlessly spam your strongest spells and have them stun enemies in the process is about as game-breaking as you can get. Even hovering dragons are fair game for the stunlock.

I dual cast incinerate with upgrades which results in 231 damage per ball. Going back to almost anything else seems so puny.

If I can’t craft it (I won’t invest the perk points), where can I find a daedric bow?

Does anyone know where I can get some additional Thieves Guild armor? I have not been in a hurry to complete that story arc and I grew out of what they had given me and sold it all off. Now I seem to have locked myself out of being able to sell anything to my fence because after my last talk to Mercer, she suddenly won’t talk to me about anything else other than how I can trade in a piece of my basic Thieves armor for something better, and too bad I don’t have any of it anymore. I have no idea who I sold it all off to, and they’ve all reset their inventory many times since then anyway.

I’ve tried to pickpocket/search for it in every store/individual/chest/wardrobe in Riften with no luck so far.

As I understand it, the Atronach Forge hidden under the mage’s guild has specific recipes for the weapons.

Letsee: Ebony bow + daedric heart + centurion dynamo core + black soul gem should get you a non-enchanted, non-enhanced daedric bow.

But, it’s a little buggy and may not work, or give you a random daedric weapon instead.

Or you could get absurdly lucky and find one. Daedric weapons and dragon armor do very rarely drop.

I think you may be out of luck if you’re on console. If you look up the Thieves Guild quest on the Elder Scrolls Wiki it says in the notes to keep the TG armor you’re initially given to avoid being “locked out” as you describe. Sorry, can’t provide a link right now, but I remember reading this and making a mental note to not sell the armor off.

Yeah I’m on a console. Ah well. I’ve developed some other fences, but she was handy to have at that location. I just hope I’m not going to miss out on more than just a convenient source of coinage.

Here’s the note from the Wiki. I keep MS Word “tip sheet” open on my laptop when looking stuff up while playing the game on console. Looks like you only lost the fence and an achievement.

When you obtain the Thieves Guild Armor do not sell it! Otherwise Tonilia will not be able to upgrade it. She will continually ask to upgrade it and no other dialogue options will be available. Not only will you lose her as a fence, but you will not receive the Achievement/Trophy (One with the Shadows) of Restoring the Thieves Guild. This is because Tonilia is the last objective.

I ran into a similar problem in Oblivion when trying to train above 75 Archery. The Master trainer required an Elven bow before she would train me, but I had long since sold off my last Elven bow and had to wait about a 10 days in-game for one to finally spawn in a merchant’s shop. By the time I got back to the trainer with the bow, whe had been killed by roving bandits!

I have a crafting question. I have finally gotten my enchanting up to 100 and have maxed out my enchanting constellation (still have yet to find a single piece of enchanting enhancement gear…no rings, necklaces, boots, gloves…nada. I DO have a few enchanting potions though). I also have my smithing maxed out (and I have some very nice smithing enhancement…+30 gloves, necklace and +25 ring). My question is, does it make sense to craft armor and weapons and then max them out on the bench/grinder and then enchant, or just make them, enchant them and then max them out? Or does it matter?

Also, if you take a potion, does time stop while you are on a crafting bench or arcane enchanter station, or is it ticking away? You only get a certain number of seconds to make stuff, so was wondering if time is going by while I’m crafting stuff, or if it just turns back on when you leave the station.

There is a perk which lets you upgrade magical weapons and armor. If you don’t have it, you can’t alter magical items in any way. It’s not that awesome fo a perk, but it useful for some of the rarer items.

I have it. I’ve maxed out my smithing (it’s one of the obscure branches in that constellation that lets you upgrade magical stuff…though, for some reason I can’t upgrade some of the named weapons or armor).

ETA: The question though is, does it make a difference to simply craft an item and then enchant, then go back and enhance it, or to craft, enhance then enchant? Will the enchants be better or worse on a simply crafted or enhanced piece of gear, or the same? Will the end product come out the same regardless of what order you do things in?

Agh. This is bad news. I gave my Thieves Guild armor to Lydia, who has gone AWOL/died.

Do companions respawn? And if they do, do they keep their previous inventory?

Yes. Enchants and smithing uogrades are completely separate.

out of interest, how did you all start the thief guild chain? Haven’t come across it myself.

A guy (turns out he’s in the guild) wants you to help him with a scam up in the market. Basically, he wants you to get into one of the vendors locked chests while he provides a distraction, then steal something (a necklace IIRC) and put it in another vendors pocket. If you complete this then he tells you he may have more work for you and invites you down into the warrens to meet at the bar down there. That kicks it off.
