The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

I can’t seem to clear out Fort Snowhawk. I thought I had cleared it out, including the prison -actually the first place I went, and I couldn’t find any more doors. My map still didn’t say “Clear.” I went outside and was attacked by three or four more necromancers. I took care of them, still not “Clear.” I went looking for a possible hidden area I missed -again, when I was attacked by another necromancer. After he was dispatched, I still wasn’t “Clear.” Arrgh.

I had a dragon flee from me earlier just when I was about to finish him. I was perfectly situated in a sheltered area on a mountain where he couldn’t get me. Meanwhile he was easy pickings. He must have flown away in frustration.

In news no one cares about, I killed my first giant last night. Kited him around his campfire and blasted him with flames while Lydia sat parked safely on a ridge and plinked him with arrows. Then we killed his mammoth just because we’re jerks.

I was a little worried that, having played and gotten bored with Oblivion only a few months ago, that I might not find myself all that invested in Skyrim. I’m finding it a very immersive world and enjoying it. Obviously the advances in graphics help but the world itself just feels better constructed. Better dungeons, better geography, better… whatever. Anyway, I know I’m late to the party so I’m sure it’s all been said before.

Minor moment: I found a horse getting attacked by a bandit. Killed the bandit but left the horse as it was flagged as “Steal”. Then I found its dead owner with another dead bandit nearby. I raised the deceased owner as a zombie and the horse came running over to stand next to him until the zombified owner collapsed into a pile of ash and the horse stared at me. I felt kind of bad. Also, changing the owner from “A Peddler” into “A pile of ash” didn’t remove the ownership flag on the horse like I’d hoped :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, I downloaded the free Hi-Res DLC from Steam.

But after loading a save, the game crashes to the desktop after about three seconds of gameplay. I tried different graphics settings, and turned shadows to “low”. No joy.

I already checked to make sure my drivers are up to date.

Turning off the Hi-Res DLC in the “datafiles” section, and the game runs ok, so I know it’s those mods.

Do I have to restart from scratch?

If there was a third party mod that changes textures, and you try to run the Hi-Res DLC, will it crash from a conflict there? What order does the system execute the mods?

I’ve found a few locations like that, there’s a bandit fort west of the tower near Whiterun where you kill your first dragon. They don’t seem to have bosses and so you never get the “Clear” tag. It’s good, actually, because the inhabitants respawn, so if you need some blocking practice to level up or whatever, you can revisit. They respawn tougher, though.

At least all that’s my impression.

Still plugging away with my mage but thinking I should’ve invested in Conjuration (for summons) rather than Alteration. Still using the same standing stone I have since I started, the one that gives +20% experience.

With my previous character, I used the Steed, which negates armor weight and increases carrying capacity, thus allowing me to skip 3 heavy armor perks. Anybody have an opinion on a stone that may be better for a mage than the + experience stone?

I think, even if a place says it’s cleared, it can still respawn. Certainly if a quest forces it, but even over time. That’s my impression although I could be mistaken. Some may never respawn, but mainly it’s a marker to tell you, the player, that you’ve been there.

The Steed is the most awesome stone for all play types, IMHO. For mage, Apprentice and Atronach are both good depending on play style, but can also be too crippling.

This could definitely cause a crash. Many of the user-created mods have to be updated with each game update. Try disabling all 3rd party mods and see if the BethSoft hi-res textures alone also cause a crash. If it still crashes, check Bethesda’s site to see if your system meets their recommended levels.

Yes, it does. Although special/unique things won’t, and in some places what respawns if affected by the choices you’ve made elsewhere (like Imperials instead of bandits appearing). And for some bugged missions waiting until the dungeon resets/respawns is the recommended fix; it takes 30 in-game days IIRC.

One exception to this, I believe, is if you clear a dungeon that contains a quest objective for a quest line that you haven’t encountered/triggered yet, all of the special/unique items and enemies will respawn once you’ve taken on the newly discovered quest.

The one that comes to mind is Hag’s End.

I cleared it first out of either curiosity or in pursuit of

word of power after getting a hint that it was there from the Greybeard, I don’t remember which, but when I went back to it for the ‘Locate the Assassin of Old’ quest every item, witch, and hagraven that was originally there was there again. I haven’t finished ‘House of Horrors’ yet but we’ll see if everything comes back the same for a third time.

Regarding your third spoiler, the location for that is random, picked from several locations. For example

I also had Dibella’s quest active, both the priest and the girl were randomly put in the same location and crammed in the same cell

Regarding Hag’s End

Was the same hag still taunting you throughout the dungeon the second time around?

Ah, I was going by just the wiki article I just reviewed wrt Hag’s End. I have not seen first hand whether or not I’ll be sent back there again wrt to my 3rd spoiler.

I didn’t get a chance to take any biometrics about your 2nd spoiler  but they both behaved exactly the same as far as I can recall.

Thanks. I can run “ultra” on the vanilla texture pack (although it’s a little choppy).

Doggone it. My husband, Argis the Bulwark, is no longer offering me home-cooked meals! Would a mod interfere with that? In addition to the high-res texture packs, I have Crafting Satchels, Midas Magic, and House Map Markers. I suppose I could just turn them off to find out. He wasn’t giving me Lovers Comfort for a little while, either, but that, at least, is back.

No solution on the home-cooked meals, but I did find BOSSto optimize my load order, so there is that.

Skyrim Jesus
Detail

Almost as good as grilled Jesus.

Now that the Creation Kit’s finished attention at Bethesda will have turned in earnest to DLC. Howard mentioned some internal ideas for DLC floating around. Among the new ideas are “epic new mounts”. I think we all know what that means; Akatosh Mount was one of the most popular mods for Oblivion.

Here’s the videowhich was shown in my studio last month- it’s now been made public so I can talk about it. Basically, the entire Bethesda studio was given a week to make whatever they wanted to with the toolkit- and there’s some amazing stuff in there.

I particularly like the seasonal foliage, mounted combat, and spears.

That was amazing. I think I’ll have to watch it a few more times to actually get a favorite, but DAMN, dude. You guys should take those weeks more often, those ideas are killer!

Sadly, I didn’t work on that project- I’m at another Zenimax studio. I just got to see the video a few weeks before the public.

That vid is super neato, Lightnin’.

I cannot see the Jesus.

I’m cranky right now because leveling in the 50s takes me forever and I’m trying to get the top-most Alchemy perk and for some stupid reason it is still pink, even though I’m at skill level 100 and have forged a perk path to it and it should be available. Grrr.

Great Video! Thank you! I had put Skyrim aside for SWTOR. Think I need to pick it back up again.
