The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim post-release thread

I fought the first Dragon that you are directed to by the main story line, then I ran across another in the big valley between the tower and all that lies to the West.

I didn’t notice that it was engaged with about 5 or 6 giants from across the valley, so I helped defeat it then was instantly smashed by the giants.

I ended up reloading and just passing by, as I could not get the giants to leave me alone and had no chance to fight them (I was lvl 8 or something at the time. No match.)

Are the dragon encounters random and unlimited, or did I miss an opportunity that I can not recover from, and also which I had no way of winning?

Re: the broken bridge in the dungeon
If it’s the one I’m thinking of, the Whirlwind Sprint shout got me across.

Re: alchemy
There’s a perk later in the tree that’ll let you know the 2nd, third & fourth effects…or you can discover them if a potion/poison gets a secondary effect.

Re: Magica/Health/Stamina
The only thing any of these affect other than the stat itself, is that Stamina increases your encumbrance max. Spells get more powerful by increasing that school’s skills & investing in perks.

There are set dragon fights (they get icons on the map) AND random fights. I’ve even seen a couple dragons simply refuse to engage in a fight.
New strangest fight I’ve been in:
A dragon + a blood dragon + a giant + two mammoths + a sabre-tooth + a pack of wolves + a bear + some bandits outside a cave + various random non-hostile wildlife. That one took a while. Thank goodness mammoth won’t follow you off cliffs.

Two interesting things I’ve found about mages. One, you can dual wield conjured swords. And second, if you’re a pure mage it’s a good idea to keep an attack-spell casting staff with you; I just fought a Boss who cast Shock magic at me like crazy and sucked all my Magicika right out. Fortunately I had a staff I’d picked up earlier that did health & Magicka damage, and returned the favor.

Oh yeah, it’s been huge and I’m always happy to see the PC version of multiplatform games flourish since it becomes more likely devs will take the extra time to make them good. I was actually talking about MW2, though, the previous copy call of duty game, which had a bigger launch. I only mentioned that because you mentioned it broke steam records and then implied MW3 was in second place.

The numbers I really want to see are BF3 vs MW3, so that if the latter is bigger I can go on a rampage and solve the call of duty problem, but the numbers aren’t public as far as I know.

How is it playing a pure casting class in this game?

In the other games, it was pretty rough.

I am currently playing as a “palladin” like character with heavy armor, shields, maces, restoration.

I may run a mage and see how it is, just looking for your personal opinion.

Argghh! I am so stupid, for some reason I assumed I couldn,t swing axe while shooting flame.I stoped one to do the other. Now things should go a bit more smoothly .

Wow, what a a game. I had some funny things happen this weekend.

First, I encountered some bandits that were on a bridge with a tower at each side. I dismounted from my horse and went into the tower to go up and fight the bandits. Problem is my horse decided to follow me up the stairs and ramp onto the narrow bridge. I turned around and there he was. I killed him several times trying to get him back down. Thank god for quicksave and quickload. Does it seem to anyone else that the game gets less stable on the PC after repeated quickloads? Oblivion was the same way for me.

I’ve turned around to see a mammoth falling 20 or 30 feet to the ground, briefly stand there, then fall over dead. Whee, free mammoth tusks to sell!

My last dragon battle was interesting, I died twice but on the third try the dragon decided to fight with a nearby mammoth and one of the rebel soldiers got involved too. So with my companion that was 5 of us in the battle.

The dragon was near the hot springs and it turned to bones, I assume that is when I absorbed his soul. I found the lair with the writing on the wall and learned his shout, but then it said I need a dragon soul to use it. Is that a bug, did I get cheated out of a shout?

What are the health levels like? I do not have the game, so when I’m reading that a spell does 30 damage, or that the Dunmer racial power does 8 damage per second, I do not know whether that is a lot or very little damage.

Also, are there any daedra besides the Atronachs in Skyrim?

I’m playing with a pure mage and self-imposed old school D&D rules. No weapons but daggers and staves, no armor (well, I have a nice pair of leather boots) and I’m up to level 20 or so and have handily and unassistedly torched the last couple dragons I’ve encountered. With dual casting and impact perks in the destruction tree one on one combat against even very dangerous opponents is perfectly manageable. Multiple opponents makes things trickier, but area effect spells are getting to be viable in those situations. The only real danger is running out of mana, but with instant effect potions this generally isn’t an issue. Pretty sure my destruction skill is ahead of the curve, though, so things might get iffy later on when destruction is maxed but still not enough.

So far, though, match the right damage type to your target and things drop pretty quick.

So far it has worked pretty well, although she’s only level 11 or so. Having a companion along helps a lot; so does conjuring up a critter to help. With two meatshields you can concentrate on blasting while they keep the enemy distracted.

I find that companions are just potential friendly fire trouble.

Running into that, as well.

Can you set them to do ranged or tank, like you could in Fallout3?

I haven’t tried yet.

Also, good grief, I can’t wait for a UI mod that converts this to a real PC interface.

Yeesh.

My two companions, one very well armed lady and one very shaggy canine, all died under terrible circumstances.

My character has developed a psychological fear of attachment and has therefore refused any more help, even shouting in the dragon tongue at nearby would-be heroes who try to help when a Dragon comes a’ flying.

The girl died at the hands of a brute of an orc. It played out in slow motion as I desperately tried to make my way between the two, only to watch in horror as the orc’s sword cut her down.

My canine companion leapt towards a particular tough draegher (spelling?) in some gods forsaken tomb. Problem was that I was setting up the undead by luring him into one of those slice’o matic traps with the swinging blades.

I pulled the chain to activate the trap only to watch in horror as pooch leaped to my defense… and got turned into purina chow.

Anyone else encounter the bug where a Dragon skeleton spawns in with all the fleshy bits intact?

Open up your spell menu, go to shouts, find one that’s greyed out, and spend the soul to unlock it. The souls don’t get spent automatically.

No worries. The respawn rate of that encounter is pretty high

BTW, is there some cooking skill in this game? Seems like all the materials are there: I can cut wood, butcher animals, find cooking salt and other ingredients, but I don’t have any recipes and there doesn’t seem to be an option to ‘craft’ quiche lorraine or lemon meringue pie.

Eh, Lydia seems pretty tolerant about being set on fire or zapped with lightning. Which is rather funny considering how put-upon she sounds when you ask her to carry something for you.

Yeah, and a couple of gratuitous shots to the side of the head are probably warranted in her case…I seriously get annoyed with her put upon dialogue whenever I ask her to fulfill her primary duty, that being my personal pack mule. I’ve gotten to the point where I will tell her to wait in some safe place, go in and clear out several rooms, go back and get her, bring her to some new safe place, then dump all of the loot onto her back before rinsing and repeating. With my own play style being a stealth sniper, she actually has gotten me into more trouble than it’s worth letting her ‘help’ out with the various mobs…not to mention all the times I had to reload because she decided to run into a room full of mobs and die (or stands on a trap having it hit her over and over again until she dies).

I wish they had some way to tell her to use a certain weapon or adopt a ranged posture, like they do in Fallout 3/NV. I’m unsure why they didn’t put something like that in.

Have you found a cooking pot or searing rack yet? Even if you find a fire, you can only use it to cook if there’s a pot or rack already there.

But I do hope there are better recipes, too. I don’t want to be stuck just being able to make cabbage stew and vegetable soup.

She only seems to be able to carry about 15 pounds of stuff or so, anyway. She makes it sound like you’ve asked her to carry a dead mammoth. Still, she seems the Xena to my character’s Gabrielle (if Gabrielle were a bit less sanguine and a bit more mousy), so it’s worth having her around.

Some fires have pots over them that you can use. You will need LOTS of "salt pile"s. Recipes are added. Most are crappy, like the ones that take raw mat + salt = cooked meat. The stews are pretty good, a couple you start with are like “+1 health and stamina regen for 720 seconds” plus something else.

I am going to trade her for someone else for that reason, her sarcastic response. No real complaints about her combat, yet. Sometimes she grabs a bow. So far I found a couple paid mercenaries and a woman who will join once you beat her up. :dubious:
