The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

I’m totally set then.

My HTPC is already hooked up to MY TV and sound system, so I guess I can use the controller and sit on my couch if I wanted to.

However, in my house the TV is the most used electronic appliance. If I started to game on it my wife would pwn me.

Luckily, not only is my computer chair plenty comfy, but my game won’t look and run like ass.

Is there any benefit for preordering? Buy from B&M or online, and you get a map? Buy from Steam and you get… nothing? A hat in a game I don’t play anymore?

All copies come with the standard map. It’s just a piece of paper though, no sweet, warm, comforting cloth or nothing.
But yeah, cloth map for pre-orders only.

I’m thinking I like this, actually.

It’s hella better than a ton of “DLC” clearly chopped out of the game for promotional purposes, or the unbalancing items BS of other RGP’s like Dragon Age.

Or the Vault 13 canteen from pre-ordering Fallout New Vegas from GameStop, which almost totally negated having to find water in Hardcore mode. Obviously somebody learned a lesson there.

I’m not sure if this has been posted yet or not, don’t be afraid to crucify me if it has, like the lazy bastard I am I didn’t check, but I found a list of 44 articles written by those lucky SOB’s that got to play the Skyrim beta before any of us (I say string em’ up! Damn them! :D).

Holy comprehensive list batman!

Thanks for that. Have something to read tonight.

Not much to add to what has already been said here but also looking forward to this one as well. Planning to call in sick the release day. ;). I preordered from Steam about a month ago and guess, based on other games I’ve preordered with them, that they will allow a preinstall a day or so before release. I’m just hoping the game lives up to the hype, and also that my poor reflexes are up to this kind of game. I was watching some demos on archery and wondering if I could think and shoot that fast. I’m a fan of ranged fighting, but the FPS games are getting to fast for me to be able to play these days without something like VATS. Well, we’ll see I guess.

I remember one time when I was playing Oblivion years ago, I was in the vicinity of Anvil at the top of that big hill. I spied a mudcrab scuttling along the distant shore. I lined up a shot with my bow, seeing if I could compensate for the distance and slope and the movement of the crab (my reticle was nowhere near it on the screen). Got the crab on the first try. I still feel kinda proud of my skillz when I think of that shot.

Something like VATS would be welcome in Skyrim, though. Oblivion had too many situations where you’d head into melee alongside several allied NPCs, and you’d pretty much have to stand back for fear of accidentally hitting them and wrecking the quest.

One of the archery perks slows down time when you zoom in, which is pretty close to VATS.

Including in-game unlockables as a preorder bonus is so incredibly lame. We used to get all sorts of cool feelies, and now they just unlock little bits of content that they lock for everyone else. It’s about as awesome as release day DLC where they lock content that comes with the game and make you pay to unlock it. Yipee.

Someone mod in the “archery” Bozar!

Seeing as how I’ve always considered myself a bit of a sniper in any game, be it Splinter Cell, CoD, Thief or LoZ, I take pride at going for the difficult shot, the one that gives your friends goosebumps if they witness you nail it. Oblivion, however, is the one game with long ranged weapons that you wouldn’t think to be “sniper” oriented, but somehow it is, whether that’s with timing a slow moving fireball to impact a distant moving target , or sticking an arrow into a rat’s eye on the other side of a very large, and dark, Ayleid room. On top of that, when you do make such a shot it seems to bring more gratification than a game that’s more long range in nature, maybe that’s because you know it’s not as easy, or because you know you just did something that the devs might not have thought possible due to the difficulty and the factors involved. (and yes, when shooting rats I do always try to hit the eye, I consider it a miss when I check the body later and it’s not the eye…vasily zaitsev )

I loved knocking down the crystals in those dungeons from as far away as possible with my excellent bow skillz.

I think I’m probably going to stick to my usual stealth/bow gameplay through Skyrim. I’ll try my hand at a pure wizard my second playthrough.

So I just pre-ordered Skyrim on Steam. Is it not supposed to download yet? Will it only start downloading at midnight on 11-11-11?

They might or might not have a pre-load for this game.

Most games do. And when they do, they usually start letting you download the game a few days in advance.

So if there is a pre-load for Skyrim expect to be able to download the game sometime next week, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday.

Then you’ll just have to wait for it to unlock (hopefully on Thursday night at around midnight.

And unfortunately Steam usually doesn’t say anything about pre-loads until they are impending. So it’ll be up to Bethesda to let us know.

Just read on the forums that pre-load is scheduled for Nov 9th. The download is 6 GB.

Which is crazy small for huge game like this. they must be using some really good compression packages.

Or other games just don’t give a fuck and load you up with a bunch of uncompressed audio and textures.

(note: this where you all laugh at me for not pre-ordering on Steam and just get the PC version…)

Okay, so I pre-ordered through Gamestop, but chose the 2-day shipping method :o figuring I’d get it next week even with the overnight seeing as how they don’t ship on weekends and delivery services don’t run either. Then, instead of signing up as a Gamestop member like I should have, I just buy the thing as a guest, thinking nothing of it at the time. Now I find out that choosing the overnight would have gotten it to me on the release date guaranteed :smack:, so I go on the website to see if I can change the shipping method, but seeing as how I ordered as a guest the option isn’t available or something :smack:. Needless to say I sent an email to their support and requested a change of shipping method, but I cannot help but continue hitting myself in the head for making two horrible mistakes :smack::smack::smack:.

I’m hoping they will have mercy on me, and forgive my transgressions…let us now pray \o/. (I’m probably being punished for not getting it for PC though…)

Well, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m already prepping my cryogenic chamber. Gonna slip right into it tonight and set it for waking me up Friday morning.

I wonder… if I shall… dream…

:D, remember what Cartman did…
