It just came on… but when I looked up, I saw, across the screen,
“Denver Co, Adams Co, Boulder Co, Jefferson Co… until 00:21 MDT…” then it said that it was a test. My heart is pounding.
I hate the new “Emergency Alert System” with that scary buzzing noise! That noise gets on my nerves. How would I be expected to act in a calm, rational manner in an “actual emergency” if I’m wigged out by that damn noise? I especially hate the fact that they run the darn thing during programs.
I preferred the routine of the old system. “This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP This was a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. If this had been an actual emergency…” etc. None of this sneaking up on you with that creepy buzzing noise in the middle of the show…“Oh, BTW, this is a test. You may peel yourself off the ceiling now.”
A station I watched when I was a kid would have “e b s” in the background during the EBS test, with each letter encircled by a pastel-colored oval. Very '60’s (even though it was the '70’s and '80’s when I saw it.)
The one time it totally freaked me out was when Hurricane Iniki struck Hawaii several years back. My ex-boyfriend lived up in Manoa Valley above the University of Hawaii and it so happened that the horn that blows the alarm seemed to be atop a pole probably only 50 yards from his house.
The alarm started wailing at 1:30 a.m. in the morning and I jumped 3 feet out of bed thinking we were getting bombed or something. Silly, I know.
I live near Broadmoor, a notorious prison for the criminally insane. One of the alarms located on a pole not far from my house and every Monday morning at 10.30am they test the alarms. I’m used to that, but what always wigs me out is that when it’s windy, the wind whistling through the trees in my back garden sounds just like the “Lock your doors! Someone’s escaped!” alarm. On windy days I can think as many as ten people have escaped.
This is a test.
