The Emperor of the world wants a Car Stereo

To be fair, the add-on for the AUX port, which is generally just a cable you plug into the head unit, is a simple and relatively inexpensive install, whereas I don’t think the same is true for a separate HD tuner for a head unit that’s only HD-ready.

I agree, and I think that Rick made that pretty clear when he explained his logic later on. I just meant that my interpretation of the OP was that he wanted to make a single purchase where all the functionality was built-in, so I could understand (initially) why Gozu felt Rick was offbase.

In no way do I think that excuses the way Gozu handled the situation.

I’m with you on this. Someone comes to the Board with a question (that they were too lazy or stupid to research themselves) give a brief, general description of what they think they might want maybe, and act like your complete and researched answer just isn’t up to par is being a horses ass.

Yeah, it’s pretty much “Do my homework for me. No, not like that, you idiot.” Pitworthy? Maybe. Bad form? Absolutely. I’m extremely unlikely to do Gozu any favors in the future.

Rereading his post, I see you’re right. I had lost track of who wrote the OP. However, the point I made about the difference still stands. Most style manuals will give something along the lines of this one from the University of Minnesota:

Imply, infer. The distinction is as clear as that between give and take. Imply is a word for the transmitting end and infer a word for the receiving end. When you imply, you deliver; when you infer, you draw from. (He implied that he didn’t want to go. From her manner, we inferred that she didn’t want to go.)He denied not only that he used it wrongly, but that there was any difference.

I would have used “imply” in the second sentence simply to avoid just this type of fooferaw. Perhaps I’ve been hanging about the SDMB too long.

I went to the website of a reputable online retailer and did a search on HD receiver + aux input. The results were what I linked to in the other thread. The wording on Crutchfield’s website has changed since I fist linked to it. At the time the search page bullet points said aux input (now it says optional aux input) When you click on the unit itself, the main page also just said aux input. ( I went back and verified this when the EOW posted his first snarky comment.) It was not until you went to either the spec page, or the accessories page that it became clear that the aux input required an additional item. so just how far should I go before I assume that I have answered a GQ? Is the search page enough? Or is the search page, and the next page enough? Or do I need to read every scrap of info published by a website before I hit reply?
Next about the assumption that he meant a front panel aux input. How was I to know that? If you don’t get specific how am I to know? He was not specific in his OP and this is my fault?

If he had come back and said, thanks, but I really want a front panel aux input, and when I looked closely this one requires an adapter we would not be here right now. Instead, I was told my search was deficient.

Is this a geek fight?

Yes, +0.5 for post-post moos.

See now this is the way I always thought the rule went. If you are talking about some who is talking or writing their own work they are implying. If you are talking about someone who is listening or reading the are inferring.
For example, in your first post in this thread, you implied that I did not know my grammar. After reading the rules, and your half-ass admission of your error* in this post I can infer that you are an idiot.

*FTR I denied that I used it incorrectly because, well wait for it, wait. Just a little longer
I didn’t use it incorrectly. As you admitted in your first sentence of this post.

As a man who is pitting someone for — of all things — insufficient gratitude, you have no standing in the assessment of anyone else’s mental state.

Nah. One doesn’t call a professional mechanic like Rick a geek in such a situation. Now, if Rick were discussing the finer points of the spark advance on a 1948 Volvo with Fersterberster distributor, and filing down part of the rotor to get an extra couple of HP out of the engine and Gozu was saying that the Spishak distributor with it’s non-phenolic rotor was clearly superior, then you could say that it was a geek fight. This, however, is no different than someone walking into a stereo shop and arguing with the help that the faceplate cover is not the exact shade of shitbrown that they wanted.

Frankly, I can’t see why Gozu wants to shell out for an HD radio. After all, all it does is make the same shitty radio stations in your area sound better. And really, do we need to hear the latest single from the Backdoor Boys, or whomever the kids are listening to these days, in digital quality? I think not.

Ingrate!

Oh, I got pitted for the first time. A dubious honor…

to Rick:

The first time I wrote the OP, I specified that I wanted the AUX to be built in. Then I re-wrote it and it read better the second time around.

Your first answer sounded like you hadn’t paid much attention to the text of the OP. I thought it was clear I wanted both components to be included in the HD radio. I was wrong and I apologize for not giving you the benefit of the doubt and for letting my annoyance show in my answer.

I confused the adapter you mentionned with the iPod adapter because I misread KS-U58 for KS-USB and made a faulty assumption about it.

Subsequently, I forgot all about it until my last answer. What I thought I was doing was admitting that you were right, barring a couple of minor details. After writing it, I realized it might be interpreted as ingratitude on my part and so I added the sincere last line to disambiguate it. I ought to have been more polite and I should have rewritten or removed the 2nd and 3rd line. For not doing that, I also apologize.

Lastly and most of all. I am sorry my comments upset you. I did not mean to be a dick to someone trying to help me. The bottom like is you’re right and I’m wrong. I hope you won’t hold it against me.

To some of the people who were quick to judge and condemn me before hearing my answer:

In my experience, stuff like that will get you pitted :stuck_out_tongue:

Gozu,

Mundus Imperator.

If I must hear shit, it might as well sound good eh? You’ll notice I also insisted on an AUX adapter which is where most of the music/audiobooks I’ll be listening to will come from.

NPR has a 24H HD station dedicated to classical music without commercials. So it’s not all crap technically (granted, I listen to classical music less often than I switch sexes. Well, almsot less often)

Well, if you people are going to be so reasonable, what are the rest of us going to do for entertainment? This is the pit, dammit. Say something nasty!

I am the only emperor of or in this world (Akihito is a usurper), and I have no particular interest in a new car stereo. A car is not the best place to listen to music anyway – too many road noises.

It makes a difference. I understand that after hearing Helter Skelter in HD format Charles Manson realized that the Beatles didn’t really want him to kill all those people.

Damn right. Who wants to talk about Paris, anyway?
