Oh, you’re going to regret this question…
Ignorance is bliss. Since I had no idea it was LAST DAY, I did my usual: I got up at quarter-to-5, showered, shaved and dressed for work, had a breakfast of oatmeal and tea, made lunches for my girls, kissed my sleeping wife good bye at about 5:45 a.m. and drove the 15 miles to work. The drive took about 20 minutes. Then I worked, a loosely-defined term with a general meaning of: analyzed data, watched the movement of the financial markets and read commentary regarding them, fielded questions via phone and email, ate a lunch of raw almonds and dried apricots, went and took a nap in my car, did some work on my several projects, which basically consist of developing spreadsheets and financial models, and calling people on the phone and asking them questions. Then I drove home in the rain at around 4:40, my drive through the hills taking me directly into the rain clouds themselves, which limited visibility and roadworthiness, but nothing serious hampered the drive, and I got home about 5:30. The kids were watching TV but they gave me hugs and kisses and made me feel welcome. The entire floor of the living room, dining room and family room was covered with brown paper and the walls were puttied and patched in preparation of a painting project. My wife got home about 5:45 and I gave her hugs and kisses to make her feel welcome. I started dinner about 6 p.m. I cooked frozen macaroni and cheese, canned baked beans, jasmine rice and steamed fresh buttered broccoli. We all sat down and ate together at the little table which is the only furniture currently in any of the rooms I mentioned. We ate and talked about what had happened during the day while we were apart from each other, but nothing really remarkable happened to any of us, so the discussion was short. The girls ate well, and we then shared the last of the Marie Callendar’s cherry pie. Then I went into the bedroom and turned on the TV so I could watch the playoffs. The Red Sox-Yankee game was in extra innings and the Astros-Cardinals game was a scoreless tie and I flipped back and forth, happy to watch the unfolding twin dramas. The Red Sox won, which made me glad. At eight, I kissed the girls goodnight. The Astros game ended around 8:30 or so. The Astros won in dramatic fashion, and I like to see the Astros win, though I am not a fan per se. Then I watched 16 Candles on AMC until it ended just after 10 p.m. Then I went through the house and made sure all was closed and locked and that the children were sleeping and well-covered. Then I hugged and kissed my wife goodnight and fell asleep around 10:30 p.m.
Had I known it was LAST DAY, it would all have been different, with less working and TV watching and more hugging and kissing. Still, what really happened wouldn’t have been that bad, as far as last days might go. I give it a 6.
