The Essential Ralph Bellamy

OK, Ralph Bellamy fans, I know you’re out there. Of the 40-odd films in which he appeared, which best capture the essence of Bellamy?

I understand he was known as “charming but dull”. Should I watch a film that reveals his other side? Did he have another side?

Sunrise at Campobello, his Oscar nod.

His Girl Friday is his most archetypal role (and the script acknowledges this).

I’m far from a Bellamy expert, but he’s definitely charming in The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell. It would be hard to call him dull compared to the ever wooden Gary Cooper though.

He had another side even if it was shown rarely. To see him playing against his image watch 1966’s The Professionals. It’s a supporting role and he only appears at the beginning and at the end. He plays a wealthy rancher used to his money and power getting him his way, a mean son of a bitch who demands things not asks for them.

The first titles that occur to me are His Girl Friday and Rosemary’s Baby.

My very first thought was “His Girl Friday.”

Cary Grant - “Say, don’t I know you…I’ve seen you somewhere before. Are you in the movies…you look just like that fellow…what’s his name?..Ralph Bellamy or something.”

Or words to that effect.
