JohnLarrigan, mattk, Coldfire: need some Ricola for those coughs?
Switzerland would have made it to Euro 2000 if it weren’t for the @##@ Danish. We were this close.

Yeah. And now we kicked the team that you were this close too. Ergo et sum: Switserland would not have lasted more than two matches either.
Hey Limeys: getting nervous yet? You’ll be happy to know that Coldfire will be officially rooting for the English team tonight. They deserver the win, based on quality of players and bad luck (and naivity) in the first match.
Britannia rules the waves! Well, tonight anyway.
BTW: an English supporter was stabbed by a Turk in Charleroi last night. Apparently a group of English hooligans were provoking some local Turks, referring to the incident in Istanbul.
A hearty “Fuck You” goes out to this 0.05% of footy “fans” that keep trying to spoil it all for the real fans. Downtown Rotterdam was a huge party place yesterday, before and after the match. Danes and Dutch were celebrating the joy of the game in peace. And that’s the way it should be, dammit.
A group of English fans played a friendly match against a group of German fans. In Waterloo. I love the effort AND the historical relevance
Not that I want to sully this fine thread with this type of thing, but up to now…400 supposed English fans arrested before the game. I hate to think what will happen if we lose.
::head hanging in shame::
England 1, Germany 0.
They’ve come a long way… the first victory versus Germany since NineTeenSixtySix. But it was a deserved win, and I’m hoping to see England in the quarters!
What a day/night. I’m nursing a serious hangover this morning. Selected memories: arriving at a bar in Lincoln Park at 12-30 to find it HEAVING with English and a good few of out teutonic friends too, waiting 20 minutes to get served at the bar, buying five beers each to ‘save on shoe wear’, Scholesy being magic, cans and bottles flying everywhere when Big Al puts in a header, the weird feeling of having beaten Germany, table dancing, singing for about an hour after the game. Vague recollections: Singing karaoke somewhere, getting a couple of beers up the Hancock Tower, walking out without paying because the waiter was too slow in bringing the cheque, feeling like vomiting in the elevator, arguing for an hour with some god-squadders on Michigan Av, more bars, more bars, stumbling out of Jimmys. Falling unconscious at home.
Two weeks until payday, broke, seriously hungry but happy.
If I have to watch one more Norway game, I may commit suicide.
Save a bullet for me, ruadh.
And another thing. When the HELL are the SFA, UEFA and the Scottish meeja going to see what, apparently, everyone else in Europe sees in Hugh Dallas - i.e. a really CRAP referee?
The masochist part of me actually wants England to be expelled from the competition. At least then we’ll be spared the usual rounds of self-congratulatory bollocks about how great England are. I thought the England - Germany game was awful, despite the result. Obviously UEFA has only made this (empty) threat on the grounds that they’ll never act on it; now that the Germany match is over, they’re assuming that the remaining England game(s) won’t see nearly so much trouble.
I like being British, but the one thing I find really difficult to stomach is this horrific attitude problem so many people seem to have about how great we are, and how terrible the rest of Europe is. The Germans, apparently, didn’t see anything special about the game. They thought it was just like any other match. Us Brits have a real problem with inflated self-image, and until we lose that there will always be footie riots, and “Up yours, Delors!” headlines, and people like me who quite fancy emigrating to Australia.
Sorry. Didn’t mean to complain; it’s Sunday night and I have to go to work tomorrow.
Anyway, football. Yugoslavia and Spain both looked good tonight, I thought. My revised “team of the tournament”:
Fabien Barthez / Laurent Blanc, Lilian Thuram, Eric Deflandre / Zlatko Zahovic, Luis Figo, Erik Mykland, Zinedine Zidane, Joseba Etxeberria / Thierry Henry, Savo Milosevic
And the donkeys:
/ Phil Neville, Lothar Matthaus, Michael Schjonberg / Dennis Wise, Allan Nielsen, Sebastian Deisler, Dragan Stojkovic (a great player reduced to play-acting), Paul Ince / Michael Owen, Filippo Inzaghi (both for gross underachievement considering their ability)
Oh yeah, forgot a donkey keeper. Hmm. How about Ivica Kralj, the Yugoslavian keeper?
Molina, surely. I couldn’t believe he got the nod for the Norway game, then again there’s lots of things about Camacho’s squad I can’t believe (Morientes? Salvo? hello?).
No Scholes on your dream team Matt?
About the English “fans”. It’ll be interesting to see the tabloids condemning them tomorrow, and then Tuesday go back to their usual hysteria-raising about Europe, asylum seekers, etc. It never ceases to amaze me that they don’t seem to realize the link between the violence and the Little Englander mentality they foster.
(irrelevant ps to JohnLarrigan: I went to Croke Park today, thought about you at halftime ;))
Scholes makes the subs bench, definitely. I did consider him.
Molina…hmm…he made that one terrible mistake, but Kralj just looks a bad keeper through-and-through.
You’re right about the tabloids. It’ll be “yob scum” tomorrow, then “UEFA / German / Romanian / [ insert nationality here ] scum” the day after.
If London_Calling checks in, what’s the score in OUR competition? You’re the only guy who knows the coding
Wanna hear somthing funny? A friend… no, scrap that. An AQUAINTANCE of mine is marrying. Next Wednesday. Reception starts at 21:00 CET. What starts at 20:45 CET? The Netherlands - France. I think that’s gonna be one empty reception untill about 23:00. Well, he could show us that he ain’t pussy whipped just yet, and install a shitload of bigscreens tuned to Nederland 2.
Nah. We’ll watch it at home, THEN drive to the reception. It’s his own fault: some things are just more important than wedding receptions.
Sorry to respond this late, but I’d just like to point out that I’m quite happy I decided to spend friday evening getting romantically entangled instead of watching the Danish team getting its collective arse kicked.
Sheesh, who am I kidding ? While it irks me to see Denmark beaten, it was a piss-poor team and now they’re out of our misery, at least. Hell, I just might watch the finals after all.
S. Norman
What are the scores, Georgie Dawes???
Oh and Ruadh, I hope you enjoyed Croke Park!! good game eh?
Well the second one (Wexford-Offaly) was good. Dublin-Kilkenny left something to be desired. Oops, wrong thread.
Larsson won MOTM. That’s all I have to say about last night
Euro 2000, pah, mickey mouse tournament anyway.
Hear hear. And Phil Neville is the one with the ears.
We put Scotland out in qualifying and Germany out in the group stage
England managers will finally stop building their teams around Shearer.
We won’t have the potentially horrible violence surrounding the England/Italy/Heysel match.
We didn’t go out on penalties.
There’s always the World Cup (yeah, right)
I’m more worried that Super Kev will carry on building teams around the “silky skills” of Ince, Wise, Neville, Neville and Heskey.
