The evolution of romantic scenes in film

Tonight I watched a short segment of “Holiday Inn” on TCM, featuring this scene where Fred Astaire is engaged in some Valentine’s Day romancing.

Then I switch to a Valentine’s Day episode of “The Simpsons” where Homer and a buddy are exchanging thoughts on various matters including picking up women.

“So, Lenny, ever get that rebar out of your head?”
“No, they just sawed off the ends and painted over the nubs.”

Homer and Marge get sentimental.

“Oh Homie, you mean to say the nicest things.”
“Well, it’s not easy with you talking all the time.”

It would’ve been fun if Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby and Marjorie Reynolds could’ve had snappy dialogue like that.

Can’t sing. Can’t act. Balding. Can dance a little

Watch ‘The Thin Man’ series. Now there’s some snappy repartee between romantic partners.

The Honeymooners:

“I’ve forgotten you’re a woman? How could I!? You’re always yapping!”

Yup, nice to see the evolution in romance over time.

Yes! Love those movies.

Dear Edna,
Your photo took my breath away. Truly yours is a butt that won’t quit.
