The Fairytale Art of Edmund Dulac

This guy painted around World War One. And his art is GORGEOUS.
Note–there are one or two tasteful nudes in there. NSFW, but be grown-up about this.

Nice. Reminds me of the art of Alphonse Mucha, which makes sense since they were more or less contemporaries. With maybe a little Klimt influence.

I think of Dulac as Klimt-meets-Rackham, myself.

Pete Beard did a good vid on him (all Pete Beard’s vids are good, if you are a fan of illustration):

Those are gorgeous, and now I need to dig out the box of old children’s books from my mom’s childhood. They may have been imitations, but that art strikes a very deep chord of memory for me.

I was about to post that !
or words to that effect

Loved those! Some of them definitely seemed familiar.

What was that being on top of the building in the second painting?

A person? A gargoyle? Something else?

I’m leaning towards chimney sweep.

Sounds good. He does have that long tool or something in his hand. One problem…he doesn’t seem to be near any of the chimneys.

That’s a golden ticket t-shirt phrase right there!

The mock-ups could use a little work…

Wind vane - look at the pennant thingy on the opposite side of the staff from the figure.

Reminds me of Maxfield Parrish in composition and subject matter. They are contemporaries so I suppose that’s not a surprise.

While all of that art falls under the broad umbrella of fantasy, he seems to do rather a variety of different styles.

I like Dulac. Some of his work looks a direct inspiration for Sulamith Wulfing.

Really like his Princess And The Pea:

Thank you.
