The first trailer dropped for the first MCU Fantastic Four. Some information has dropped previously such as casting and thematic visuals, but this is the first time to see it in action. I’m not sold yet on all the first family of marvel but I like what I see with Ben Grimm and Sue Storm. The aesthetics and music are really fun as well.
This definitely is a multiverse Fantastic Four and not mainline MCU. I wonder if they end up in the main universe at the end of the movie or leave it for a future issue such as with the X-Men.
I hope it is good, though no one has been able to make a good one of these yet. We did not see Mr. Fantastic stretch out, always a very silly looking effect. We saw everyone else do their power, though.
Is Dr. Doom in this? With this being multiverse, I feel like an alternate Tony Stark is increasingly becoming a likely candidate for being Dr. Doom.
The trailer shows Galactus’ shadow and is presumably the big threat. We already know Robert Downing Jr is playing Dr Doom in next year’s Avengers: Doomsday. Is he connected to this world or yet another dimension? No clue. But Dr Doom being an alternate Tony Stark is very likely. If he’s in this movie at all, it is most likely an end credits stinger.
Downey as Stark as Doom seems to be the online consensus, but the Russian (?) astronaut with Reed gave off some strong pre-accident Viktor von Doom vibes.
I watched the unreleased Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie, and while it was terrible, it at least tried to be a Fantastic Four movie. I’ve never been a big fan of the Fantastic Four, nor the Avengers really, but if they can make a good Avengers movie I don’t see why they can’t make a decent FF movie. They’ve got good characters to work with and decades of comic book stories to mine from.
Stretching is an inherently silly power though. It’s going to look silly and I think they should just lean into that.
Personally I think using Dr. Doom or Galactus in the “first” movie is a big mistake, for the same reason using the Joker in the first Batman movie was a mistake. Where do you go from up? The franchise Big Bad should get a build up, not be tossed out in the very beginning. Plenty of interesting second-tier baddies they could be dealing with first.
Online speculation is John Malkovich is playing Red Ghost. So there will be Galactus and the previously announced lady Silver Surfer along with Malkovich. I would bet money that Doom is introduced but not a big part of the movie.
The scuttlebutt I’ve heard was that Galactus will destroy Earth, but the FF will escape to the MCU.
The astronaut with Reed was Ben Grimm (The Thing). He piloted the craft. Dr. Doom never went to space with Reed. Indeed, getting them in the same room post-college would have been a Bad Idea. Doom hated Reed and blamed him for his “disfiguring” accident.
Re: the trailer: I thought it looked good. I’m encouraged for this movie. When Kevin Feige was asked about a year ago what project he was looking forward to, he answered Fantastic Four. He usually says whatever is being released next.
I have to agree with DigitalC that Pixar nailed this – their Incredibles basically took the FF and ran with it. Helen Parr/Elastigirl’s movements are fluid and graceful and don’t look silly at all.
The FF was my favorite comic for a long time – all that Jack Kirby art and inspired weirdness. Too much of what HAD been FF material has now been spread around through the rest of the MCU. I hope they can retain at least some of the good stuff.
Pedro Pascal is a great actor but I think he is miscast as Reed Richards. He has the wrong bearing for the character. I don’t know how else to explain it. Hoping this is a good movie though. I love the vibe. Super Hero movies can use more sci fi.
Stretching as a super power will always look either goofy or like body horror, which is why i assume they somewhat changed Ms Marvel’s power to be more like green lantern. You can’t change Mr. Fantastic, he is a much older and established character, but you can lean in more towards his mad scientist side.
