Having looked at some of those pictures that Equipoise posted, I’ll say he’s a bit better cleaned up, but still…meh. The proportions of his face just don’t do it for me at all.
My tastes may be a bit unusual, I am actively repelled by Brad Pitt, to the confusion of almost every other women I’ve ever mentioned that to (and probably gay guys as well, but I don’t think I’ve ever discussed him with any).
Ah yes, Jamon Jamon. That film has something for everyone. For you girls and gay guys, you have Javier Bardem bullfighting in the nude. For us straight fellas, you have Javier Bardem licking 17-year-old Penelope Cruz’s naked breasts.
This thread is freaking me out. Why would anyone blame the actor for his look and actions in a role he was hired to play??
That’s so sad, that now he’s so identified with a role, one of 43, that he can no longer be thought of as a person in his own right? That’s so sad. Not trying to convince you, but take a look at his acceptance speech from the other night’s Screen Actors Guild awards, and tell me he’s still creepy to you. I’ve liked him for years, and he’s always come off as a sweet, humble guy. He’s a very very very good actor, on his way to a much-deserved Academy Award, and it’s too bad that this one role is being held against him in any way.
(unfortunately the audio is slightly off on that video but it’s the best one I could find, with his entire speech)
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie of his, actually I didn’t realize he was bad hair guy in that movie until after I decided he wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m basing my opinion strictly on the pictures I’ve seen.
I agree with what several people have said, his face proportions just seem wrong to me. The nose, chin and ears just strike me oddly.
Oh, and while I’m at it, for those who might cringe away from Daniel Day-Lewis because they now think of him as a drunken, ruthless oil baron, take a look at his Screen Actors Guild acceptance speech to see what a shy, sweet guy he is in real life.
That’s too bad, you’ve missed a lot of good movies.
I wasn’t really talking about you and those who find him not their cup of tea, but those who used to find him hot but now can only think of the character of Anton, as if that defines his real-life looks and personality.
I THINK you may be taking this thread a touch too seriously. I’m looking at him as a piece of meat that I may fantasize about sexually in my lonesome midwestern life, not as a person with feelings and intelligence.
Ruin for certain people you mean, not ruin as an actor. What any one person thinks of Javier Bardem, hot or not, creepy or not, doesn’t matter. He’ll continue to act and get great roles and he’ll get more Oscar nominations (he’s already been nominated twice now, and his other nomination was for a swoony, smokin’ HOT poet ) and life will go on pretty much as before for him.
He’s already moved way past No Country For Old Men and the character of Anton Chigurh. He just played the swooning romantic part of Florentino Ariza in Love In The Time Of Cholera (which I missed, unfortunately). His next role is as a randy painter in the Woody Allen movie Vicky Cristina Barcelona (with Penélope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson). Then he’ll play the gangster Pablo Escobar in Joe Carnahan’s movie Killing Pablo, with Christian Bale. Then he’ll be in Rob Marshall’s (Chicago) movie Nine, with Penélope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Sophia Loren (yay!). And he’s supposed to be in the next Francis Ford Coppola movie called Tetro. He’ll be alright, and he’ll look completely different from role to role, the way he always has. I don’t doubt that someone who “ewww’d” him in No Country will see him in a role in the future and think “that guy’s hot, who is he?”
To be fair, this is in the Trivia section of the “No Country” IMDB entry:
The Coen Brothers used a photo of a brothel patron taken in 1979 as a model for Anton Chigurh’s hair style. Looking at its weirdness after getting the hair cut, Javier Bardem said “Oh no, now I won’t get laid for the next two months”.
Hetrosexual female, and I agree. However, I will not be surprised to discover that his cultural hotness increases in proportion to the amount of media exposure he gets and in direct relationship to his salary for his next three films.
For some reason, there is half a universe out there that finds Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise hot - and media exposure and money (plus, quite honestly, charismatic smiles) seems to be what they’ve got going.
