The Film: A Single Man (No Spoilers)

We went to see A Single Man yesterday and liked it a lot. Colin Firth deserves an Oscar nomination for this film - he brings so much to the screen with with few words - just subtle movements and nuance; quite amazing. Julianne Moore was also perfect in her role.

Set during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and based on a story by Christopher Isherwood, this tale of a British college professor who has lost his lover of 16 years in a tragic auto accident is a time capsule for pre-Stonewall, closeted love and life. While Brokeback Mountain took place in about the same era, A Single Man deals with the subject differently. This film starts where Brokeback ends - the after effects and coping with the loss of a great love.

Although hardly the “feel good” film of the year, it does convey a final message of hope and profound insight that makes it all worthwhile.

Even if you don’t go to the theater to see this, be sure to catch it when it shows up on your local cable station! It is director Tom Ford’s (fashion icon) first film and he did a great job bringing this story to the screen.

Seriously, not A Single Man has seen this film other than me?

Um, I can’t claim to be single ***or ***a man, but I saw it & loved it. Definitely not feel-good, as you say, but definitely moving. Excellent cast. So sad. But fantastic.

Yes, one of my favorites of the year as well (with an award-worthy original score, too; quite haunting). Colin Firth has always been pigeonholed as the Period Cuckold (English Patient, Shakespeare in Love) or the Romantic Dreamboat (Pride & Prejudice, Bridget Jones), it was nice to see him sink his teeth in a meaty, complex, immensely touching role for a change.

Saw it and loved it. It even made my top 10 of the year (167 movie ample). Work has been busy and my brain is a bit fried but one thing I will say is that the movie is friggin’ beautiful (aesthetically). Well worth watching just for that. I can’t think of any examples right now but it was surprisingly funny.

Saw this movie yesterday. Colin Firth is probably my favorite actor. However, I guess I chose the wrong movie. Although I admired it, it didn’t lift my spirits, which is what I needed on this particular day. I enjoy seeing him in one of his more outwardly passionate roles.
