I remember when I was a young fella, of five or six years, I would get a buzz goin’ when Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” video would come on MTV.
What was the first song you rocked to?
Other songs I remember rocking to when I was little:
i really liked “king tut,” the one steve martin sings on saturday night live.
“rock around the clock,” which was also a favorite of my dad.
“like a prayer” was my first (and, basically, last) madonna song, and really the first song that i really, really liked that hadnt been introduced by my folks. i would sit around and watch vh1 for HOURS waiting for it to come on, often while naked, coloring in my coloring books. usually i would put a tshirt on before i saw the video, because i was afraid the mailman would come in (although the mailman never came further than the edge of our driveway, where the mailbox was located) and see me naked.
the song i initially thought of when i read the thread title was “uncle john’s band” by the grateful dead - that was the first dead song i heard, and it kicked off my whole hippie groove. but anyway.

Good gawd, Silo you make me feel like a wrinkly old septegenarian! I remember when the Boss’s “Born in the USA” came out. I was in college, working for a music store. All of us clerks fought over who would get to take home the big five-foot-square posters of Bruce Springsteen’s Levi’d butt!!
“What was the first song you rocked to?”
The Beatles, “Hard Days Night”. From my dad’s record collection. That would be a record ALBUM. LP. 33RPM. Vinyl.
…that, and the Carpenters covering Dionne Warwick’s “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” penned by Burt Bacharach. [also from my dad’s record collection.]
The first song I remember my mom playing for me, when I was a wee child, was “Chantilly Lace.” I thought it was just great, especially since I was wearing a ponytail at the time, as did the girl to whom the Big Boppers sang.
The first pair of songs I remember waiting for on the radio (same summer, as I recall) were “When Doves Cry,” and… um… don’t hate me… “State of Shock,” that duet Michael Jackson did with Mick Jagger. I was 13, I didn’t know any better.
The first song I rocked to was “Heart and Soul”, which my grandmother used to play when I was 4. She would play it over and over, and I’d dance to it until I was exhausted. Then I would nap until my parents returned from work. (She only pretended to be dotty!). The first song I really grooved to by conscious choice was “Hard Day’s Night” by the Fab Four. It was the first record (45 rpm) that I bought. The second, more lasting was the “Nightflight to Venus” album by Boney M. I can just imagine how cool me and my 13 year old pals looked, dressed in polyester, groovin’ to “Rasputin”, and singing all the words. hearing Rasputin still gives me nightmares to this day.
Wow, let’s see. The first song I really learned to sing was ‘I’m Beginning to See the Light.’ Remember? Fred Astaire sang it in Easter Parade? Anyway, my sister played it on the piano and I sang it.
Also, my mom used to tap dance in the upstairs hallway with me…and we’d sing ‘Me and My Shadow.’ That was AWESOME.
The first radio songs I remember…
“Rock the Boat”
“Saturday Night” Come on, you know you love it… S! A! T-U-R! D-A-Y! NIGHT!
“Touch Me” from the Doors
“Got to Get You into My Life” and “Michelle” from the Beatles
“Photograph” by Def Leppard. Pyromania was the first album I ever owned, and when Def Leppard played the Philly Spectrum in '83, that was the first concert I ever went to.
Okay, for the first…8 years of my life, all I listened to was my mom’s music. We moved around quite a bit and weren’t in a lot of places that even had current music radio stations.
So, all of the early stuff I remember rocking out to was Golden Oldies; Beach Boys, Beatles (more from my Dad), Elvis, Chuck Berry, the Supremes; you name it. Then, on the other side was my dad, but to a lesser extent as I didn’t see him as much. Anyway, he liked singers like Donna Summers, Simon & Garfunkle, the Police, Madonna, Steve Miller Band, Reo Speedwagon, Super Tramp, Eddie Money, some great blues & jazz; you name it, my dad liked it. So, I remember rocking out to a lot of stuff as a kid.
About the only type of music I had no idea about was punk, but that came later.
Anyway, now today, I pretty much love any kind of music, except for country. Sorry, just haven’t been able to appreciate it.
