The first time I've seen snow falling in Australia

I spent the weekend at my parents’ place in Bowral, about 120km south-west of Sydney. It’s situated in an area known as the Southern Highlands, at an elevation of about 700m, which is quite high by Australian standards. On Saturday evening it started to snow and by Sunday morning the house and garden were covered. It wasn’t a huge fall - only about 5cm - but it was the first time I had ever seen snow falling in Australia and I was pretty excited. Our family gathering very soon degenerated into a snowball fight between the children and the adults and we all had a great time. We even made a snowman! The snow had all melted by late Sunday afternoon but we took lots of photos of the memorable occasion.

I did hear about this, a nice surprise for the locals no doubt. The nearest I lived to the snow region in Australia was Albury/Wodonga. It didn’t snow there but it was within an easy drive for day trips to Mt Buffalo.

Glad you had fun Cunctator.

You’re one up on me. I’ve never seen it snow in Austalia.

Went skiing last week at Buller, so I saw it snow a lot.

The snow was widespread across southern NSW. Here’s an article from today’s SMH with a picture of the countryside at Taralga, to the north of Canberra.

Of course, the *real * excitement would be a snowfall in Sydney itself, but that’s rather unlikely. I gather that the only time it has snowed in central Sydney, at least since 1788, was in June 1836.

I’m Canadian. I can only (roughly) imagine what seeing snow for the first time would be like. lucky you.

Wow! That picture on the site is pretty. I really don’t know how you guys react to the first snow over there, since I live in the Midwest and all, but I’m glad you enjoyed it. Snow is awesome, I’m just not a fan of it for 4 or more months.

How fun! I grew up in Northern California, where it doesn’t usually get cold enough to snow, but it did one day in February 2002. I woke up to a great deal of confusion (is the world a negative today?) and three inches of snow. They shut down the schools - how could they make the kids go to school on their ONE SNOW DAY EVER? (The last time it had snowed was when I was ten, in 1988.)

Now I live in the midwest, and I am totally blase about snow. Now that I have proper winter clothes and all, anyway.
