Inspired by glass onion’s thread, Fresh Pineapple, what foods would you recommend to someone who has been eating nothing but Wonderbread and water his entire life (for reasons unknown)?
glass onion seems incredibly impressed with fresh fruit, which I think would be an excellent starting point. Cheeses and wines would be a good addition at this stage. But I ask the SDMB, what categories and what individual food items would you insist upon introducing?
A Taco Bell Double Decker Taco Supreme.

It may not be gourmet French cuisine, but really, it’s quite an adventure for the mouth. Warm, soft flour tortilla. Smooth, creamy, warm refried beans. Crisp, salty corn tortilla. Little granules (for lack of a better term) of spicy (well, kind of), salty beef. Then the cool creaminess of the sour cream. Shredded cheese. Cold, crisp lettuce, and little red cubes that resemble tomatoes.
It’s such an incredible melange of temperatures, flavors, and textures. They’re so much fun to eat, and very interesting for your mouth (for those of us orally fixated).
I’ve been rather partial to the artichoke, in all it’s many forms. A stuffed artichoke with garlic butter is dreamy, as is the artichoke hearts with Italian sausage, mushrooms and penne pasta.
Has anyone here tasted a mangosteen? I read an article once that tried out a bunch of delicacies on a blindfolded panel and concluded that mangosteen was The Ultimate Best Taste in the World.
I can’t personally recommend it, because I’ve never been able to find one, but I’ve been longing to taste it every since.
Ice cream. You can never go wrong with ice cream. It’s soft, it’s sweet, it’s great on a hot day, and there’s a huge variety of flavors and brands to try. The poor bread-and-water guy could probably have a ton of fun running through a dozen tasting spoons at a Baskin Robbins.
Kumquats! A great shock when that first spray of juice hits, but he’ll be back for seconds.
And for dessert, homemade gingersnaps, fresh from the oven and still almost hot enough to burn your mouth. (See Zenster’s new recipe thread for details.)
Zenster gave some EXCELLENT suggestions! Top notch! I would add: Lobster Bisque soup made from scratch (NO CANNED!). I also love fresh bleu cheese crumbled on my salads.
