The Food Appreciation Thread

Inspired by glass onion’s thread, Fresh Pineapple, what foods would you recommend to someone who has been eating nothing but Wonderbread and water his entire life (for reasons unknown)?

glass onion seems incredibly impressed with fresh fruit, which I think would be an excellent starting point. Cheeses and wines would be a good addition at this stage. But I ask the SDMB, what categories and what individual food items would you insist upon introducing?

Damn, this should probably be in IMHO. Sorry Coldfire/UncleBeer/Cajun Man.

A Taco Bell Double Decker Taco Supreme.
(waiting for laughter and gasps to subside)
It may not be gourmet French cuisine, but really, it’s quite an adventure for the mouth. Warm, soft flour tortilla. Smooth, creamy, warm refried beans. Crisp, salty corn tortilla. Little granules (for lack of a better term) of spicy (well, kind of), salty beef. Then the cool creaminess of the sour cream. Shredded cheese. Cold, crisp lettuce, and little red cubes that resemble tomatoes.

It’s such an incredible melange of temperatures, flavors, and textures. They’re so much fun to eat, and very interesting for your mouth (for those of us orally fixated).

I love 'em!!

Fresh Kiwi.

Followed immediately thereafter by Panang Curry.
That should wake up some wonderbread-suppressed tastebuds

I’ve been rather partial to the artichoke, in all it’s many forms. A stuffed artichoke with garlic butter is dreamy, as is the artichoke hearts with Italian sausage, mushrooms and penne pasta.

Has anyone here tasted a mangosteen? I read an article once that tried out a bunch of delicacies on a blindfolded panel and concluded that mangosteen was The Ultimate Best Taste in the World.

I can’t personally recommend it, because I’ve never been able to find one, but I’ve been longing to taste it every since.

Garlic.

Liver with a nice Chianti ffft ffft ffft

j/k hehheh

I’m a sucker for a spicy Blackened Redfish.

Ice cream. You can never go wrong with ice cream. It’s soft, it’s sweet, it’s great on a hot day, and there’s a huge variety of flavors and brands to try. The poor bread-and-water guy could probably have a ton of fun running through a dozen tasting spoons at a Baskin Robbins.

Maine lobster

Prawns (fresh from the tank)

New York strip steak (charred on the outside, medium rare inside)

Italian blood oranges

Real Lebne yoghurt

Fromage de Affinois (St. Andre or Blue Castello) cheese

Freshly baked bread

Scrambled eggs made with ones taken straight from the nest

A perfectly toasted campfire marshmallow

Top quality European chocolate

Homemade ice cream straight from the hand-cranked freezer

A black twig variety heritage strain apple

Sliced ripe fresh-picked tomatoes with a sprinkle of cracked pepper and sea salt

Freshly made pasta cranked out minutes before cooking

Coffee made directly from freshly roasted beans

Freshly shucked oysters with a squeeze of lemon

Hand made tamales

Raspberries picked straight off the vine

Steamed pencil-thin asparagus

Apple smoked bacon

Those skinny little Danish hot-dogs
Err … I’ll stop now.

lychees you peel the pinkish outside layer and the juice you suck…yum…

This would probably send them back to Wonder bread but:

Indian food - tandoori chicken, samosas, naan, saag paneer, malai kofta, chicken in a creamy curry sauce, dal mahkni, and end it with gulab jamun.

Damn, but that’s good eating.

Peking duck! Prepared properly, it’s buzztastic!

A frozen lime margarita with salt

Fresh squeezed orange juice blended with puree of fresh strawberries

The best quality caramel-filled chocolate candy

My mom’s homemade apple pie, hot, with vanilla ice cream

My aunt’s freshly made mozzarella

If I weren’t against meat, I’d highly recommend my mom’s meatballs with her homemade, from scratch, tomato sauce

(God, now I remember that there ARE some benefits to being raised by Italians…)

11 year old cheddar sliced thinly, and toasted on top of an english muffin spread with butter and vegemite.

Spicy Tuna Roll

A hand-made crabcake from some of those little diners on the eastern shore of Maryland. Well, two or three of them. Soft shell crabs too!

Pomegranites.

Osso Bucco, with freshly made bread and extra virgin olive oil to spread the marrow on!

Fresh strawberries dipped in 15 year old balsamic vinegar (sounds weird, tastes divine!!!)

home-made ginger beer!

In the junk food realm I would highly recommend Oreo’s and chocolate Brownies.

Kumquats! A great shock when that first spray of juice hits, but he’ll be back for seconds.

And for dessert, homemade gingersnaps, fresh from the oven and still almost hot enough to burn your mouth. (See Zenster’s new recipe thread for details.)

Zenster gave some EXCELLENT suggestions! Top notch! I would add: Lobster Bisque soup made from scratch (NO CANNED!). I also love fresh bleu cheese crumbled on my salads.

Shall we also name drinks? Alcoholic or non?

Catfish fried to a crispy golden brown, steak fries, fried okra, pinto beans, and mac & cheese. Not Kraft mac & cheese, but from scratch.

Yeah, it’s a heart attack waiting to happen, but it’s damn fine vittles.

Oh, and mint chocolate chip ice cream for dessert.

Qadgop, hows about a recipe for the ginger beer, please?
