The Forsyte Saga

So, who caught this last night? I got a phone call around 10, so I missed the first half of the second part…Irene married Soames? How come? Would someone be so kind as to fill me in?

Also, are there plans to re-air the first episode (or series)?

Goddam it, I missed the second hour, too—the power in my whole town went out. Anyone fill me in on what happened after the party to introduce Irene to the Forsytes?

Irene married Soames because she and her mother were broke.

Let’s see, the second half…(I never pay attention to names so some of these may be wrong.)

June (Joylon’s daughter with the wife he left) is engaged to Bosinney, an architect, but isn’t allowed to marry til he makes 400 pounds a year - which he’s going to do once he completes the country house Soames is building for Irene (but he’s building it to get her out of London, not to be nice). In the mean time, Irene and Bosinney are starting to make eyes at each other. Fun fun next time this is on.

Monty went bust - he owes the bank at least 100 guineas. The repo man came to take some stuff to make up for the debt and Winifred (wife) and her father (who owns the house, remember) are PISSED.

And Old Joylon, in one of the final scenes, is making up to Young Joylon. Helene is perturbed…she’s afraid her father-in-law is going to take her kids away, or something like that.

Well, Eve, it looks like you and I are the only ones interested. I checked the website for my PBS affiliate and didn’t see any mention of a rebroadcast, though I did findthis lovely episode guide. It contains the descriptions of the future episodes, so don’t read ahead unless you want to be scandalized. ([sub] Soames! You bastard![/sub])

Oops, sorry, Chique, I didn’t see your reply.

Naw, it’s ok…I searched PBS for the character names; didn’t think to see if there was an episode guide, as well.

Check your local listings (KCTS9 in Seattle re-airs Masterpiece Theater at 1am on Thursday morning (wednesday night) which allowed me to watch Angel, tape Alias, and then see this sometime this weekend (probably))

BTW, anyone read the books? Should I hold off watching while I get a copy and zip through those first?

Who’s “Monty?” Rupert Graves?

I assume Irene and Soames are hideously unhappy already?

Did we meet Bosinney already, or is he new in the second hour?

. . . damn power failure . . .

OK, I checked out the episode guide—thanks for the link, gallows—and found the line, “Young Jolyon and Helene have two children, Holly and Jolly, and live in bohemian poverty . . .”

“Bohemian poverty” is no excuse for naming your children Holly and Jolly. I assume their last name is “Christmas,” and they spend a lot of time with Burl Ives?

I really can’t remember when Bosinney turned up…may have been early in the 2nd episode.

Monty is Montague Dartie, Soames’ brother in law. Remember the engagement party at the opening? That’s him.

There is, btw, a nifty little family tree here.
