Mods forgive me if this is in the wrong place. But it is pretty mudane and pointless. Please move if needed. Thank you.
If you have not been living under a rock, then you probably know who Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church are. Loony toons baby. I found this on Religionnewsblog where they got it from The Wichita Eagle on April 2nd. Basically Phelps and his wife have 13 ( ) children. Here is the list and what they do:
1.Fred Phelps Jr., staff lawyer at the Kansas Department of Corrections
2.Mark Phelps, businessman in Southern California, estranged from the family
3.Katherine Phelps-Griffin, law license was indefinitely suspended effective in August 1993 for 30 counts of giving worthless checks
4.Margie Phelps, director of re-entry for the Kansas Department of Corrections and a lawyer
5.Shirley Phelps-Roper, lawyer at Phelps-Chartered
6.Nate Phelps, businessman in Southern California, estranged from family
7.Jonathan Phelps, lawyer at Phelps-Chartered
8.Rebekah Phelps-Davis, lawyer at Phelps-Chartered
9.Elizabeth Phelps, lawyer, no longer in practice
10.Tim Phelps, lawyer and employee of the Shawnee County Jail
11.Dortha Bird (nee Phelps), lawyer practicing independently in Topeka, estranged from family
12.Rachel Phelps, lawyer at Phelps-Chartered
13.Abigail Phelps, works for the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility, part of the Juvenile Justice Authority
Does anyone notice that they are all involved in the law with the exception of the two who are estranged? Apparently they support his cause with the incomes they make. After all, he spends $250,000 travelling the country.
I just think it is interesting that they are almost all lawyers.
Here is a Wikipedia article on the Westboro Baptist Church, and here is a link to a bluntly truthful biography about Fred Phelps. (Brace yourself if you don’t know Fred Phelps’ track record, it is a very rough read.) I am not at all surprised that most of his family became lawyers, I think he saw to it that they did so, to help further his own ends.
I know his track record. Because of my academic interest in cults, I follow his antics. I try to be careful of the judging thing, but this guy really is so far off of center…
It’s not so weird when you learn that basically, if you grew up in Fred Phelps’s house, you went to law school. That wasn’t a choice-that’s what you did, or you got out.
He basically wanted a family of lawyers and that’s what he got.
Yeah, we’re very familar with Phred. Cruise over to the Pit to find out more. Now that you are a member, you can search if your stomach is strong enough.
Phelps is such a psychopath that I object to people calling him a homophobe, as I feel it’s demeaning to all the honest knuckle-dragging bigots out there.
I will second that. I agree this guy is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. I really would like to stand next to him on the day of judgement just to watch (not that I don’t have alot to account for but still…)
Try living in the same city as they do, and seeing the WBC all the time.
I’ve watched them especially since the early 90’s, when this anti-gay schtick started, but I’m the same age as his older children and I remember Fred was known as a whack job even then. I was in junior high with his oldest daugther, and she was a nice girl. I don’t know what happened, but she’s not with the family. Two other brothers, and a younger sister are also out, and the latter changed her name so as not to be associated with the rest of her siblings.
I’ve stood withing arm’s reach of Fred, while I was on a counter-picketing gig, and let me tell you the man is scary. This may sound silly, but when he walks by there’s a tangible feeling of evil passing.
They seem to be backing off from picketing the military funerals, now that so many states are passing laws restricting picketing times around them. They say the laws will be judged unconstitutional, but in the meantime they will obey them. So now they are planning on going to D.C. and picketing at Walter Reed Medical Center, and picketing live soldiers instead, with the screed “Thank God for Maimed Soldiers.”
