The Genius of the Facebook interface

Something about you ‘Charter Members’ makes me wonder what the ‘Member’ refers to. You people just don’t look altogether right to me. I question your manhood.

OK, since you ask, I’ll stop here.

You’re a retard.

3 weeks it took for you to come up with that?

OMG, just think what the world would be like if Joe Stalin had this thing.

I was reminded of this thread just now. I was preparing (with GIMP) a Happy Birthday Card for my wife’s Timeline and decided to preview it on Facebook in a half-finished form. This was pointless — and I won’t do it again — but I thought it would be harmless, because I selected the “Only Me[sic] can view this post” option.

I was unaware of two things: (1) The “Only Me[sic] can view” option (silently) allows Tagged people to view it also, and (2) Facebook’s face-recognition software was about to tag my wife automatically as soon as I uploaded the image. (There may have been a way to disable that, but I was not presented with such an option.)

As soon as I posted this half-finished birthday card intending that Only Me could view it, my wife saw it (in another room) and commented on it! No tragedy … but a reminder to me of what geniuses the Facebook designers are!

I did enjoy rereading the “helpful” comments in this thread! Especially amusing were the suggestions that Facebook is not the proper website for communicating with one’s Facebook friends! :smack:

I didn’t know this was an old thread when I started reading it, but I was very surprised that most dopers thought the very idea of sharing a photo on Facebook with some instead of throwing it up on everyone’s newsfeed was about the stupidest thing ever.

Anyway, what I’ve been upset about is that you are not able to change your profile picture without throwing the new one up in everyone’s newsfeed. Of course, this is incomprehensible to most responders in this thread, but please note that other social platforms like LinkedIn allows it.

But this thread reminded me of this old annoyance of mine so I did a new google on it, and whaddayaknow, there’s a solutions for it:

For those who don't want to click, in short you upload a picture in "only me" mode (a few heads explode right now, I guess), put it in you profile picture, and then allow others to view the pic. (IIRC, see the vid to be sure.)
