The Gift of the Magi...okay, not really, but kind of.

So it’s ElzaHub’s birthday today. Following tradition, I waited until I left work to go get him a birthday present. He had taken the afternoon off, and picked up Baby B for me, so I went straight to Target from work. I’d been debating between the first season of Doctor Who or the first season DVDs of Extras.

So I picked up Extras. I also got him a book that I thought he’d like, cards from me and the kid, and headed home. Got everything wrapped and gave him his gifts before Baby B went to bed.

My birthday is on Monday. I pretty much bought my own gift a month ago (a baby carrier that I wanted), but he planned to get me something anyway. We do tend to have the same tastes in stuff, but it’s never been a problem before.

So…I gave him his gifts. He opened up Extras. And started laughing.

Turns out he got the same DVDs for my birthday.

And the book I got him? He already has it. I thought it was a different book about the same subject.

We got each other the exact same card for our anniversary last year, so I guess it was bound to happen.

In the meantime, we’re exchanging my DVDs for Little Britain season three, and his book for a Philippa Gregory book for me. I think next time, we’ll just run our gift ideas by each other before we buy them :D.

Years ago, when people still bought new music albums on records and cds had not yet been invented, my mother went to her favorite record store–which had a lot of local music available. She picked up the album she came for, looked at the picture, looked at this guy in the store, looked at the picture, maybe spoke to a clerk in the store, and then went over to the guy asked if he was the guy whose album it was, and asked if he would sign it. Sure, no problem.

This was in December. Mom had purchased the record for my Dad, but was a little concerned that he might buy the same record for her. So she kind of hinted around that not being a good idea. This made him puzzled. Plus, keeping the news that she’d met this guy (I don’t recall his name) was driving her bonkers. So finally she just pulled out the record and showed him the signature. He was appropriately impressed.

My parents’ birthdays are only a week (and a year) apart. This year they are spending a weekend in a lodge watching wildlife together.
