The Gift is a British video about 45 min long and it’s about the ethics of genetic engineering. The story is set between the present and 16 years into the future and follows two separate storylines. One is about a girl who is an aspiring footballer but finds out she has developed an inherited disease, Friedrich’s Ataxia. This completely turns her world around as she finds out she will end up confined to a wheelchair etc. She has a 14 year old brother who has a 1 in 4 chance of also developing Ataxia and part of their story is the family campaigning to allow her brother the right to get tested.
The other story is of a 16 year old talented tennis player who finds out he was genetically selected to have good athletic abilities. His world is also shattered (though not as the girl’s IMO) because he thought he worked hard to become a good tennis player, not simply because he was ‘given’ the ability to. The boy’s mother is a carrier of Friedrich’s Ataxia which meant the boy would have a 1 in 4 chance of developing the disease. Before he was born, his father, a geneticist, persuaded his wife to be screened so they could choose a child who wouldn’t have Ataxia. His mother wanted to have a natural birth and asked the husband to not genetically chose the best pick of the embryos. The father lied and ended up picking a male with athletic ability instead of picking an embryo at random.
So after all that lol, I was wondering if anyone else had seen this and where I can find more info about this programme. It’s not on IMDB so I’m stuck.
