In Shutter Island, “Edward’s” character is shown to dislike water. We start off in a rain storm and he’s all queasy.
But there is this one really fantastic scene which initially looks like an editing flaw. I wondered about it for a while and then forgot. Later did some reading and figured it was intentional.
The scene is this. When “Edward” is interviewing the patients, he meets a lady, Mrs. Kearns.
When Chuck gets her water, you notice that she has no glass in her hands. While initially, you think that is her craziness kicking in, we are shown her keeping down an empty glass. This is Edward/Andrew suppressing the water. Remember water is his enemy?
The page you linked is good enough as FanFic goes, but I don’t agree with the “suppressing the water” idea. Daniels/Laeddis has not problem being outside in the storm and swimming across the water to the lighthouse. If he was so terrified of water so as to suppress a glass of water, how did he do the other things?
I thought the movie was left open as a debate over what was really true: 1) Was he really Laedis?, or 2) Did they really drug Teddy Daniels who had uncovered their secret?
I think the movie gives many clues that either could be accurate.
The opening scene has a rain storm, Leo’s character is throwing up. Every time there is water, he’s in distress, you can see it on his face.
Curious to know if you think there is another reason why the glass of water would disappear and reappear? I love getting various perspectives of this film. I definitely don’t think Scorsese would have allowed for an Editing mistake like that…
