The Golden Stars above the Soccer Logos - What do they signify?

I’m watching the Champions League game between Man United and Bayern München and once again I’m wondering whta the stars above the team logo on the chest really mean. Man United has none, by the way, Bayern has four.

You see these seemingly standardized stars in national club games, the world championship, whenever.

I first noticed them during world cup, and believed that you had one star for each world cup gold; and hence one star for every time you won gold in whatever tournament you’re playing right now (which would give different number of stars depending on trounament). But that does not seem to be the case.

So, in short, whats with these stars?

According to this, the stars on Bayern Munich’s jerseys have to do with domestic league titles. There is no standard across Europe for this like there is for the World Cup and international teams.

A common standard (in Italy, Holland in anny case) is; One star= 10 National championships

Thanks for the replies. Seems that there is no international standard on this, in other words? - That makes sense, since I couldn’t make any sense out of it.

Same in Norway, one star = 10 national championships - which makes my team, Rosenborg BK, the only team in Norway with stars, two in fact
