As for my favorite episode, it’s a toss between “Crustacean Nation” which featured a fantastic lobster (which I baked in my cast iron skillet as a matter of fact), and “Scrap Iron Chef” which I’ve yet to try, but was a great episode on it’s own. **

“Scrap Iron Chef” Definitely. I don’t even eat pork anymore, but that one was soooo funny.
Equipoise, lighten up already and watch Senhor BAM!!

Also a big fan of “A Cook’s Tour”. I miss both with no cable.
Good Eats is a wonderful show. I lust after his plunger measuring cup. Why I don’t just go buy one, I don’t know, but that thing is great.
It is the element of “why” and not “how” that really caught my notice regarding this show as well. Favorite episode: well, I’m not sure, but any man who can make a fruitcake look good (as in “It’s a Wonderful Cake”) is surely cut out for cheffery.
I was over at my Mom’s place a few days ago, and was telling her about Good Eats. She seemed vaguely uninterested. Then I noted that the show was just about to come on, and I suggested we turn on the TV, hoping that it was an episode which would adequately display the godliness of Alton.
It was the coffee episode. My mom is a coffee fiend.
She’s completely hooked now, and I’ve been trying to find the perfect coffee setup for her ever since.
And put me down on the list of people recommending his book. Great reading.
I love chix noodle soup and chix pot pie. He should do the pie from scratch, because I’ve had pie w/Bisquick crust. And, if doable, the broth from scratch.
My favorites are the one where he made Broiled, Butterflied Chicken (I make that all the time) and Scrap Iron Chef. And the cookie one. And the coffee one.
Do I have to pick just one?
I made a Brined Turkey this year and it was wonderful.
Sure thing Blue Curls, but the only things on it worth watching are the all knowing, all powerful, all cooking Alton Brown and Iron Chef.
Inspired by this thread I made a caeser salad this evening from the Good Eats recipes. I know most people here understand but for those that don’t I made it absolutely from scratch save the bread for the croutons (and I could have made that too but that might be going too far). So garlic croutons from scratch, making the dressing in the salad, on the table in front of everyone. And you know what? Absolutely perfect. I’m never buying caeser salad dressing or croutons again.
He’s OK. His cornbread was not good. Cooking oatmeal overnight in a crockpot is also exactely the same as cooking it in a pot. My husband is a huge fan so we have to make everything from the show. We just had his tomato sauce (please do not buy sherry vinegar though…there are no uses for this and it tastes like garbage). We also have the probe thermometer, the rocket-ship tea kettle, the cast iron pan, and whatever else he hasn’t shown me yet.
I’m not a big fan of cooking. Far more trouble than it’s worth. His explanations of why stuff happens are fascinating. If there’s a better cooking show, it probably exists in another universe. Sometimes I catch a few minutes of Emeril before AB comes on, and that guy…at least a vacuum cleaner you have to plug in before it sucks.
