A great site to visit. I clicked on Pilot AND Controller React to United 109’s Philly ATC Meltdown. It made me laugh because my 1st encounter with a tower on my first cross country resulted in ATC yelling at me for entering their airspace without permission. It scared the crap out of me. But I had actually contacted ATC earlier and was following their instructions to report 10 miles out. I was flying so slow he forgot I existed. I thought I flew into a TFR (Temporary Flight Restriction) area on my first flight as a newly minted pilot.
This incident looked quite impressive, but thankfully no casualties besides damage to a 10-year-old 787.

May be a tailstrike in there, but hard to tell from the huge clouds of dust kicked up by the engines at that extreme AoA.
Landing was exciting. Main gear tires came apart energetically, from heavy landing weight (the plane orbited for two hours to burn off enough fuel to land at all, and it was probably still quite heavy) and maybe tire damage from the initial overrun.
I’m looking forward to a thorough investigation on how this got this way.
Oof… Just as a layman passenger halfway through I would have had bells ringing in my head to the effect of “umm… rotate any time now, Cap!!!”. Someone typed in some wrong numbers in preflight, is my guess. ![]()
I dunno–this seems like a pretty egregious mistake. Aren’t you supposed to have enough runway to abort at rotation speed? Jesus. Very expensive and almost tragic mistakes were made.
Not necessarily. The board pros will be along soon, but your rotation speed can most certainly be after V1, the last speed at which you can reject.
Yep. Max abort speed, by design, is always <= rotate speed. And the equals case is very rare.

I’ll briefly pick up the baton here to explain “balanced field length”, which means the accelerate-stop distance is equal to accelerate-go. IOW, it takes the same amount of space to have an engine failure at V1 and either continue the takeoff and meet performance expectations, OR reject the takeoff and stop on the remaining runway.
Most operations are required to achieve at least a balanced field length for the given conditions. But usually, there’s more runway than necessary, which means you then have more stopping distance in the event of an abort.

Internet speculation I’ve read is around some of the brakes activating during the takeoff roll (for whatever reason)
Shredding the landing gear tires on the end-of-runway lighting would definitely explain why those disintegrated so completely at touchdown.
