Small plane; smells more like an accident than an attack so far. But still.
Just saw that too. CNN has a picture.
Isn’t this kind of a strange accident? Did the pilot fall asleep at the stick or something?
It’s near the river, on 71st and York, so I’m guessing a heliocopter: they crash into the river pretty regularly. How ghastly for the people in the building! At least it happened in the daytime, when maybe there weren’t as many people home.
Argh, my stomach just dropped. I really hope someone comes along shortly with a positive press conference about how this was just an unfortunate accident.
Just so everyone knows, there is a parallel thread in the Pit: 10/11?.
No real news yet, but it looks like an accident.
I’m sure it’s just an accident. Small planes have crashed into buildings before and the building has stayed standing. Unfortunately, we’ve learned it takes a jetliner bound cross country to bring down a high-rise.
Anybody got a chill that today is October 11th?
Here’s more. Plane.
That’s a heck of a fireball and impact for something reported to be small.
Hey, Eve, I thought there was a “no fly” zone over Manhattan for private aircraft. Urban myth?
Same here
I don’t know about over Manhattan, but helicopters and light planes fly over the rivers constantly.
Latest: Plane apparently multiengine. Apparently doing aerobatics?! over the East River. Fox News is mystified as to why they pilot didn’t try to hit the water.
CNN’s Miles “Fly Boy” O’Brien is saying there is an open “Visual Flight Rules” corridor over the river below 1000’.
Take anything you hear over the next few hours with a grain of salt. Eyewitnesses can be unreliable. Facts take time.
I came into this thread honestly expecting to hurl insults at the OP for a misleading thread title. I apologize for that insulting assumption.
And yes, my heart went into my throat.
If you read the old 9/11 intial reports, a paper airplane bounced off the WTC.
(sorry that its Fox, but even broken clocks are right twice a day)
Cops had to wrestle a guy to the ground who was trying to get into the burning bldg - said his pregnant wife was inside. Frantic. Took several cops to subdue him.
4 alarm fire. Folks trapped above the fire. I wonder why they don’t go to the roof and hope for a helicopter.
40 floors high and around three apartments destroyed. Are we sure it wasn’t a North Korean nuke?
I’m not holding out a lot of hope for the pilot but hopefully there will be no passengers or tennants as casualties. This does happen though… remember the similar incident just months after 9/11.
2 confirmed dead?
I just walked in to the newsroom and everyone had CNN on. FREAKED me out.
And yes, it is kinda creepy that it’s 10/11.
