The Great Ongoing Aviation Thread (general and other)

A good bit of publicity regardless. I wonder if they will have the different routes available as options on any given day depending on the weather conditions? It’s normal to have various route options but I don’t think it would be that common to have them flying in opposite directions.

It took 4 years to determine a person who apologizes in advance for his actions was on a suicide mission?

That does seem a bit slow. Here’s more: 2018 Horizon Air Q400 incident - Wikipedia

Also of interest:

After seeing the later pictures of the plane I don’t think it’s salvageable but they might be able to finish the 2nd one under construction. I’d expect all the tooling is long gone though.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Putin sent more missiles at Mriya just because.

Update on that story:

Not GA, but any DR.1 (replicas) you see flying today are GA.

On this date in 1918, Manfred von Richthofen was shot down and killed.

China tight-lipped on the China Eastern flight MU5375 crash.

Well I’m shocked.

I guess his next video will be “I crashed my Ultra Light”.

Student pilot comes under fire while landing a plane at Gardner Airport (yahoo.com)

The pilot tells Boston 25 he was two minutes away from landing and about 700 feet in the air when the bullet went through, hitting the fuel tank. Student pilot Dan Black says he and his instructor were practicing landing in the four-seater single-engine plane when they heard a pop and then smelled fuel.

“Once we started to smell the fuel, we knew something was going on,” said Black. “But we didn’t think it was a bullet. We saw that fuel was coming out of our wings, so we knew we had an issue with the left tank. And we parked the plane and dumped all the fuel out into buckets. And then during that process, we noticed there was a hole in the wing.”

I hate it when they shoot at you on short final.

It went through the wing and into the bottom of the fuel tank. at 700 ft AGL that had to be a very small caliber bullet. Possibly a pellet from an air rifle.

As opposed to going straight through the wing you mean?

the article made it sound like penetrating the wing was significant. It’s a soda can shaped into an airfoil. the tank isn’t very thick either.

A $660m whoopsie:

This one shows a closeup of what looks like an exit hole with a ruler:

A bit keyholed, looks like a 0.22/5mm rifle bullet to me.

NOT good:

The guy in the aisle seat must have farted really bad!

They need a boarding sign that says “you must be this sober to board and depart” with a picture of Foster Brooks
