If it had been a U.S. carrier I’d have put even money that it was the captain.
For the second time in six weeks, a near miss at Reagan National airport
FAA investigates after planes almost collide on runway at Reagan National Airport (wjla.com)
Scary stuff
Edit to use a link that has the ATC audio
Ah but were any of the pilots involved naked? Inquiring minds want to know.
When I saw the headline, I just assumed it was a member of the flight crew.
It does sound like somebody got caught with their pants down on this.
Has there been a streak of these?
Well played.
I wonder if he barely made his connecting flight.
Ha! That’s a good one, too.
How do we know it was his birthday? Because he was wearing his suit.
Hmmm…not quite so funny. But I applaud the effort.
Let’s end this sidebar with a joke:
A pilot walks into a his Aviation Mental Examiner’s office for the usual exam, but he (the pilot) is wearing nothing but cellophane tape wrapped around his body.
The AME says: “I can clearly see you’re nuts!”
“Four Engines for Short Haul” – The Inside Story How BAe 146 Started the Regional Jet Revolution
One of the uphill battles BAe faced was operating four engines seemed ludicrous and expensive, and airlines weren’t shy to share that fact. BAe always came armed with cost and operating statistics to demonstrate the aircraft was just as inexpensive to operate as a twin-engine aircraft, and that the economics were better than even turboprop aircraft.
I remember flying the 146 in and out of (I think) Washington National a few times when I was working for the US Army. I always thought it was an under-rated plane. Now my favorite short-haul is the EMB 190.
I’m pretty sure I mentioned this before, but my dad worked for a regional airline that bought some BAe 146s. Every few weeks he’d go to England, pick up a brand new plane, and fly it back to the U.S.
One day I flew up to WJF to get a $100 Pepsi (and I don’t even prefer Pepsi!). A server at Foxy’s Landing (the airport diner) snapped a photo of me. That was in the late-'90s, or maybe 2000 or 2001. Anyway, I thought I’d look to see where that helicopter is now. And I found it.
At least four airplanes I’ve flown were later destroyed in accidents, two of which involved friends of mine. The most recent was a jet I’d flown two weeks before, but luckily the crew (also friends) survived.
It always reminds me that we play this game for keeps.
Two of the R22s I’d flown were destroyed in crashes. Another one may or may not have been; I’ve heard conflicting stories. Now I’ve read the Schweizer was lost. Three or four crashes, no injuries aside from abrasions and bruises.
Had a similar experience looking up the plane I soloed in. Was later involved in a VFR into IMC incident, but unusually both on board survived. Pilot had to walk back to the airport through a frozen swamp with two broken ankles tho.
I’ve flown (an introductory lesson) one helicopter, an R44. Couple weeks later it looked like this…
