Philippine Mars heading out into SF Bay on her way to Arizona. Apparently they decided against a layover in San Diego, so this will be her last-ever flight.
Not a good month to fly a Lear jet -
“A Learjet 35A veered off the runway after landing and crashed into a Gulfstream 200 business jet on the ramp at Scottsdale Municipal Airport” ; one dead & two critical
Early indication was a collapsed landing gear on one side.
And a video:
Owned by Vince Neil, a singer and the frontman of the rock band Mötley Crüe.
Can anyone estimate the speed?
Roughly 35 miles per hour, give or take. It was traveling around 1 plane length per second, and plane length is 49 feet.
I was thinking it wasn’t going all that fast, so why was it fatal?
It looks like the impact was right on the Lear’s cockpit. Unlike cars, aircraft aren’t made to withstand collisions.
I like how the articles repeatedly say the collision happened “on the runway”. Despite them hitting an unoccupied shut down parked jet. Which you just don’t find “on runways”.
Ref fatalities, it looks like the G200’s wing was at the perfect height to be a guillotine slicing right into the Lear cockpit at windshield level. I doubt that hurt for long.
There are any number of runaway jet collisions that end with the cockpit of one embedded in the horizontal tail of another. Assuming airplanes of the same general size class, e.g. bizjet, RJ, narrowbody airliner, widebody, then the cockpits, horizontal tails, and outer wing sections are all at about the same height above the ground.
So why do we park in a driveway but drive on a parkway?
Because the runway is full of wrecked jets. Silly question!
The runway is not a reasonable place to park?
NO RUNNING IN THE PARKWAY!
Officer, I swear that parked car jet pulled out in front of me.
The White Zone is for immediate loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the Red Zone.
Listen, Betty, don’t start up with your white zone shit again
I’m in Arizona. Do you know where in AZ the Mars is headed?
Edit: never mind. It landed on Lake Pleasant, not far from me. Maybe I’ll check it out.
Going to the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson. Good article w lots of pix: WWII-era Philippine Mars flying boat makes stopover in Alameda: photos.
Hmm; duelling ETAs.
Anyhow, I’m surprised to see it landed at Lake Pleasant. That’s a long way from Tucson. Lake Roosevelt seems a more likely choice. I hope the landing wasn’t precautionary due to some mechanical problem. Not that it greatly matters. That was its final flight and if they made it down in one piece, that’s still Mission: Accomplished.
If they were planning to disassemble and truck it from Lake Roosevelt, doing the same from Lake Pleasant isn’t that much more difficult. Having to pass through at least the outskirts of metro Phoenix on the way can’t be convenient though.
The only decent body of water even closer than Lakes Pleasant and Roosevelt is the San Carlos reservoir, but that doesn’t seem to be well-serviced by roads.
Cool plane. Sorry there are just two left.
Listen, Elendil_s_Heir, don’t start up with your white zone shit again.
Really, why pretend? We both know perfectly well what it is you’re talking about. You want me to have an abortion!
