The Great Ongoing Aviation Thread (general and other)

A club being formed around a specif home built all in for a meet & greet? Paint colors being like a club patch?

Big planes. small planes. tail wheels, tri-gear or both?

Mass formation takeoffs usually have special permission from the Tower and Departure Control at major airports.

Maybe something in the local news??

No visible tail wheels, but retractable gear. Low wing. Most unusual feature was that the leading edges of the rudders were forward swept.

Oshkosh is only a couple hours drive away, and i just found that the EAA annual shindig starts tomorrow. There’s gotta be a connection.

Sounds like Mooneys.

Looks a lot like their online pics.

Also, i saw their website pics touting … something approved by the FAA in March, so maybe this is part of a big sales pitch at EAA.

Mooney Caravan formation 2015 EAA AirVenture (video, 3.47)

Mooneys in flight (image)

Still pic side view looks dead on color-wise.

I sent an email to Mooney HQ asking for anything they could tell me about today’s flight. Wonder whether I’ll get a reply.

I got a reply from Mooney confirming it was the Mooney Caravan. Unfortunately no count of how many planes were in it.

The ‘local’ fly-in, which I missed again this year, has a flyover of Van’s RVs. There’s usually 30 or 40 of them.

Another question and another reply from Mooney - today’s takeoff was 51 planes! And I was wondering if I’d inflated the number in my own head.

I wasn’t able to open that arlingtonflyin site you linked for some reason, and googling for it shows that there are fly-ins or air shows in Arlington, WA; Arlington, TX; and Arlington, VA. You’re in WA, n’est-ce pas?

I was hoping to see whatever pics might be there, and if that phalanx of RV’s might be the West Coast Ravens – of whom I’ve written earlier in this thread. (See the links in that post – some of them have a lot of good pics of RV’s and RV’s flying in formation.)

Arlington, WA.

Alas, their website is light on photos. Here’s their Facebook page, which has lots of photos and videos.

I lurk on here more than anywhere else, so will put in a bit of a brag. After many years building finally flew my RV. Engine didn’t run as good as I hoped so need to work on that some more.

Flew just great, still grinning.

Double-plus-kewl! PICS! What model RV?

You got a good wild custom paint job yet?

The engines for RVs of course don’t actually come with the kit, as far as I know. You had to buy that separately, right?

Where are you? Anywhere on or near the far western reaches of the United States? Are you a West Coast Raven (or planning to become one)? Or any other RV club? I’ve kinda-sorta discovered that there are many RV pilots-and-owners clubs around the country (and I’d expect elsewhere too).

We get RVs flying through here now and then, sometimes a bunch in formation. (Byron, California, not to be confused with Byron Bay, Aus.) Sooner or later I’m going to talk one of those pilots into taking me up for a spin with him/her (perhaps even literally )!

(Oh, and did I mention: PICS !!! )

As for all the other readers here: See what I mean about adrenalin?

Highly Mundane and Pointless post I just made in another thread (about duct tape, actually) that mentions something about aircraft, so I’ll just include it here by reference:

Something about holding aircraft together with duct tape

This is from a few years ago. A bear attacked a guy’s Super Cub in a remote area, so he fixed it with duct tape.

8A, the tandem model with the (lighter in this case) tricycle gear.

Not too wild, a military inspired like most -8 models. Went with a IJAAF scheme, as all the RV’s with P-51 colors creates a “Target Rich Environment”

Yes, you have to buy the engine separately. I’m not rich enough for a new one, so got an old O-360 out of an Apache.

In Utah, so in the west, but not near the coast. Not really a club joiner.

You do know that they call it the $30,000 free ride? I have 39.3 hours more to fly before I can take passengers, and am a big fat guy so unless you’re small we would be aft the aerobatic CG limit. So for spins you’ll have to look elsewhere. http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/images/smilies/smile.gif

Nice! Catto prop?

Sweet!

Yes. Got it used as well from another RV guy moving up to constant speed.

I have a love/hate reaction every time i pass this place.

:::: sigh ::::
