The Great Ongoing Firearms Thread

Can you expand on the known issues? I would expect an $1100 rifle to perform. My bolt action 7mm mag certainly does, but it’s another category.

I used to have an FN FAL. I sold it for the deposit on my first apartment, figuring I could always buy another one. And then the ban came in the '80s. The last time I looked, non-FN FALs were available; but actual FNs were like five kilobucks.

Me too.

My local gun store contacted me today, the Keltec arrived, paid my transfer fees and filled out the paperwork. So I’ll pick it up Friday.

Unlike most of my pistols (designed for carry) or my rifles (with glass or not suited to it) I’m planning on buying a red-dot for the PCC, and my research says a Sig Sauer Romeo 5 is probably the best bang for buck when it comes to a budget red dot that is actually worth the money you paid for it.

Any opinions on alternate budget (but not junk) optics? I’m planning on buying one near July 4th, which is when I often see discounts on firearms and accessories, or at least free shipping if I buy from an internet source (I’ll probably also buy one or two spare Glock 19 magazines at the same time).

SIG or Holosun, Bushnell TR-25 if you’re really on a budget.

Definitely don’t get Amazon-grade stuff, in fact don’t buy any optics off Amazon even good ones due to chance of counterfeits.

G19 PMAGs are about $12 now, so if you’re not in a hurry that’s your high point.

Yeah, the TR-25 and 26 came up as “also-rans” but I figured if I can get a sale, I’ll stick with the Romeo. Magazine wise, my rule of thumb (since I don’t really plan for various SHTF levels of prepping) is three known good magazines (generally, but not always OEM) for any detachable magazine firearm I own. Since it only comes with one, that means I’ll need to buy two.

I have mixed emotions about the PMag. I have a pair for my Mini-14, and they were prone to alllll sorts of issues, but of course, they’re also NOT the polymer mags they’re justifiably known for. I figure that for a popular and commonly sold platform like a Glock 9mm I would NOT have that problem, but the prior bad experiences still haunt me. But even not on sale, I’d be getting two for one or better pricewise on a Pmag, so it’ll probably be the final choice.

AR-15 and Glock PMAGs (though I haven’t used the latter as much) are solid. They’re just not metal if you prefer that.

Do not confuse with Promags, those are generally regarded as poor qualtity.

Ah, brain fart! Thank you for the correction. Minor concerns and mental fog cleared, and no, I don’t care about metal vs. polymer, I care about functional performance, though currently my removeable magazines are all metal because that was what was available for them (I have primarily S&W M&P’s for pistols and the mentioned Mini-14, otherwise, it’s all bolt, internal mag, or lever action).

Have found that to be true in my experience. After many feeding failures I tossed mine in the trash.

Just to share the anecdote with my ProMag for the Mini, I had bought them because I bought the Mini used, but had to buy it sans magazines, because the ones that the seller included (who was a very nice person) weren’t legal for Colorado.

And at the time, for some reason, I couldn’t get Ruger 10 round magazines unless I wanted to pay 50% or more online. 20 rounders? Sure. 5 rounders? Only if I went hunting through local stores. But 10s? Fugaddaboutit.

So I got the pair of Promags because there aren’t exactly (or weren’t at the time) many other aftermarket options. And they worked… kind of. If I underloaded them (7 and 8 respectively) they fed fine. One more round and they’d fail to feed.

I have of course since gotten some 10 round Ruger factory mags that work fine, and the Promags are in the back of the gun safe marked with a 7 and 8 stencil respectively if for any reason I HAVE to use them.

I should add if you see Mec-Gar brand, they’re great. They’re actually the OEM manufacturer for many brands (CZ, Colt, S&W, Keltecs that don’t take Glock mags, and more) but sell under their own brand as well. Indistinguishable from the “real” branded ones besides labelling.

And 72 hours up, Sub2000 collected, checked, and cleaned, I’ll be putting it the safe until I have the optic and spare mags. Sadly, I probably won’t have a chance to practice with it for a month or so, but I’ll do a real basic zero with a bore sight once I have the red dot.
