Yay!
Very glad that advances in Medicine are allowing musicians to continue playing. Arthritis can be a terrible disease.
Arthritis sucks big balls. I hurt too much to even think about playing. Sadly medicine hadn’t advanced enough for me.
Maybe if I OD on my Vicodin…
Cool technique to pop open a humbucker case.
You don’t need StewMacs overpriced fretting hammer. LOL any small hammer is fine. Although a brass hammer will protect you $1.50 putty knife’s handle. ![]()
It would be interesting to see the sharp edge he put on that putty knife. He probably hit it a few times with a file.
Why did the guy get excited finding two creme pickups?

The original Gibson PAF humbuckers were not designed to be shown with their covers off. Gibson didn’t think about the colors of the plastic bobbins used. It turns out the majority were black, some were Zebra, one black one white, and a few were double cream. That was added to the Lore of the PAF - just like “having covers off is better,” “getting a double cream PAF” was seen as better. Double whites have been desirable ever since - that’s why DiMarzio Suoer Distortions and Seymour Duncan JB’s and '59’s are typically double whites, because they hit the market at the height of PAF Magic.
I wasn’t familiar with the PAF humbuckers. I just looked them up.
Thank you.
This thread is always so informative.
I think the reason he said “Ooh, double-creme” is because DiMarzio has a trademark on double-creme humbuckers. As far as I know, you cannot buy a double-creme SD. You can get double-white, but not double-creme. I would post to another forum that discusses this, but I think that might be against board rules. Just google “dimarzio double-creme trademark”.
I’ve been playing a lot of my new bass lately. I find it to be a lot more physical than guitar. The tips of my index and middle fingers on my picking hand are now always numb so I’m looking forward to when that goes away.
The SD is such an awesome board.
I get so much information here. First I learn about PAF humbuckers and now that there’s a trademark on double creme.
LOL this thread rocks.
I’m always curious when someone posts to this guitar thread. I never know what I’ll learn next.
WordMan and the other posters are always available for an answer.
Guitars are important, man.

When Carvin announced that they found some 80s colored pups in the warehouse they put up the red ones for sale on their site. They were all m22s and I bought a set (M22T & M22V) for my Carvin DC127M. You can see why I want em and they sound sweet.
The guitar next to it is my Carvin Bolt kit with upgrades and the pick guard was custom made from Terrapin.
Reds my favorite color.
we need a Drool emoticon.
No joke, my first three cars were red. My wife put her foot down and said no to the 4th.
I play a Red PRS S2 Mira. It doesn’t have red PUPS. They’re black.
Both guitars are very nice. I bet people notice when you get on stage.
I’m not pro enough to get on stage but I played at private parties with a drum machine (Adrenalinn III) and I get asked if is that a PRS?
Some asked to play with it and I let em. All in fun.
My Carvin has some upgrades too. I ordered it with 10" radius Ebony fretboard with SS frets, 4-2 head stock and maple cap. My Bolt kit has the same neck and Walnut body.
I put the Steinberger gearless tuners on the DC127. That’s the best tuners I’ve seen.
Whoa. The linked article said it was expected to fetch $60 - $80,000. They normally like to predict low to get people to think they have a chance, but whoa.
They can have it. Ugh.
AFAIK Prince owned and played a lot of guitars. There is a video, buried somewhere, in this thread about a custom one made for him by a luthier in Europe. Prince died before he could take delivery of it.
I’m a bit surprised someone valued one of Prince’s guitars at 700k.
I guess someone out there really loved Prince.
It’s fugly, yes, but his shows were all about excess, and giving the audience their money’s worth, and that guitar fits right in.
Giving credit where it’s due, here he is playing the shit out of it:
Wow, that fits certain definitions of “beautiful”.
I surrender.
My custom bass is built. ![]()
It’ll ship Friday. They got the weight down to 7.6 lbs. Weight and balance are the only reasons I went custom.
I choose my case yesterday. It’s a soft case with a rigid frame and foam. It’ll have Mike Lull’s logo on it.
It’s a bit pricey. I wasn’t going put a custom bass in a $50 gig bag.
I’ll post photos after the bass arrives.
