CBEscapee has a problem with his new amp. I’m not sure. I’m wondering if he leaves it unplugged for three-four hours, maybe it’ll work again. Hope it’s not a blown capacitor.
ETA: Just one. Kid.
Hmm - link doesn’t work. Hard to search on “comics zits gas” in Google, too…
Try this.
What’s that, bout a grand of guitar?
That’s hilariously specific for a non-geek comic strip. And yeah, that’s about right - pricey enough.
Thanks. The link I provided apparently is only authorized if you are linking through the Washington Post site.
Yes, hilariously specific for a general audience comic!
My second guitar was an SG Special, around 1972. Fixed intonation bridge, though.
Davidm has questions about buying a guitar.
Just re-found my old acoustic. It’s been in… storage. Let’s call it storage… for a number of years. It’s made by Tranquillo Giannini, and it’s labeled as a Giannini serie estudio.
Got a stamp in it, 1 AWNE 19.
19 fret, rosewood neck. It’s well made, but sloppy glue is visible. Student series seems about right. It sounds good, even with busted old strings. I’d guess it dates to somewhere around 1980. Anyone know anything about it?
newcrasher is looking for acoustic guitar songs he might like to learn.
Well I found their web site here, but you probably already found that. If you go to the Downloads section, here, they have product catalogs that go back to the 70’s. Sadly I haven’t found one with acoustics of 1980ish; there’s a number that look likely, but I get electric guitars brochures, or amps, or the PDF is corrupted and won’t open (that last may be their ISP being unreliable, so try again later).
Are you sure about the “AWNE” stamp? One of thier product pages show GWNE models, but they only go up to GWNE 18 currently, no 19. Is that “A” maybe a “G”?
Oh, no, it’s one hundred percent an AWNE. I’ve found other people with one on the internet, mostly asking about it.
No clue. Sorry.
An amusing clip about GAS, created by Jeff Bamburg.
Gotta love online stuff for geek-specific humor. “I need a fan-fret guitar” - like even most guitar players know what a fan-fret is
Here’s a photo of a fan fret bass - notice the frets are closer for the lightest strings and farther apart for the heavier-gauge strings. That is supposed to account for a POV that different tone ranges sound best on a certain fret-board scale length. So some geek (in a good way) designed a fan-fret, compound-scale design. Lots of folks experiment with them - especially tappers and proggish-avant music players…
I like the punchline. Reminds me of the old joke:
Q: What’s the difference between a musician and a pizza?
A: A pizza can feed a family of four.
Wow, that bass looks like an Escher drawing.
That’s hilarious. “Learn to play guitar and make hundreds of dollars a year.” :D:D:D
Guitarfetish is having a sale on their blem guitars. Code is blem15.

They even have the 500 I want, and that ‘KEEF’ model 825 looks so good. But I’ve got to buy the Rock Band Mustang, because where I need practice is speed, and this should be exponentially better than a metronome.
Good lord - those prices are ridiculously low, but I have no idea how to assess their build quality. If I could afford for the experiment to fail, I might take a chance on a fun configuration I might not try otherwise - like a Jazzmaster body or the hollow-body with P-90’s. I would NOT be interested in trying to get one of these in a classic design - e.g., Strat, Tele, LP, etc. - I know them too well and the quality differences would standout too much to me - not to mention that for a “foundation” guitar you should reach for as much quality as you can. But to try something different? Why not?
As for the Rock Band guitar - I’ve read about it. It sounds like it has a possibility to be a true ramp up to actual guitar playing. I will be interested in hearing your impressions…
Build quality is excellent, and the hardware is damn good. And the pickups are outstanding. Same place I got my XV-585 from. (The odd red chambered not-a-Les Paul) The BLEM15 code will save you fifteen percent off that price. Do buy a hard case, though, for shipping.
Seriously. Go crazy. PULL THE TRIGGER! (Pull it! Pull it! Shoot to kill!) (Er, sorry, was listening to AC/DC on the way in to work today.)
Wow. I’d totally get one if I didn’t already have five electrics, three of which I actually play.
