They suffer from the “Step 2: ??; Step 3: profit!” syndrome. They are not into process and procedure. And they honestly believe that monkeywrenching the normal order of business will automagically result in the whole system folding and surrendering to their Calvinball system of governing.
But may I remind you a majority of the Conference nominated Jordan. Enough of the so-called mainstream “can live with this” so the chances for the mainstream to make the FC submit are not great.
That would be and interesting situation: the Constitution does not require that the Speaker must be qualified to be President, which would still leave Patty Murray third in line of succession.
Just saw Gaetz and a few of the “we fired McCarthy” group offer to accept censure or even being kicked out of the Republican conference and giving up their committee assignments of that would help Jordan get elected speaker.
Good googly moogly. They want this way too much. Must mean it’s an even worse idea than we recognize.
Yeah, this is giving me pause as well. What would be the goal for installing their guy into this particular role? There must be some thing, some motivation.[\sarcasm]
Of the many amazing things about this insanity, what may be most amazing is the house members who are being threatened and having their families threatened for not voting for Jordan. How is this not causing htem SOME pause about the state of the GOP and its voters? I mean, I am surprised they are standing up to it at all, but if it were me, I’d be thinking: do I really want to be a member of this party when I have to hire security to protect my daughter from my own voters???
I think this would be an opportune time for Jordan to give up. The House has now denied him three times, setting up a good parallel with another historic figure Republicans claim to venerate.
How about if they toss out of the Republican Conference the whole lot of them? MTG, Gaetz, Jordan, Boebert, Biggs, Gohmert, Brooks, Perry… Just toss them out of the party and let them form a new on on their own. See how that works out for them.
Oh, then they’d lose POWER . That’s the most important thing, right?
They really need a candidate in that “sweet spot” that McCarthy occupied. If they nominate anyone to the right of McCarthy, they lose the moderates, and if they nominate anyone to the left, they lose the FC. Is there anyone else that might possibly be acceptable to both extremes?
Anything is possible at this point. I guarantee that if they do McCarthy will never make the “mistake” of trying to find a bipartisan solution to any problems facing the nation.
Yes. A few pundits are now saying that this is beginning to reflect badly on Democrats too, and I agree with this analysis.
Don’t get me wrong, it shouldn’t, but most people have a poor understanding of this process, and the history, and will start to believe some of the republicans’ talking points about it all being Dems’ fault. Especially since the MSM has been woeful at pushing back against this narrative (with a couple of outliers, like Tapper, who has been great recently).
So Dems are likely looking to see how they can wind this down too, while hopefully getting some concessions at the same time.
If some of these death threats were actually carried out, the House would end up with Hakeem as Speaker, and probably end up doing away with the one objection rule.
