Gaetz has already said he won’t “fault” Johnson if he does a short-term CR, perhaps even with Democratic support.
Why he is OK with Johnson doing it but kicked out McCarthy for doing it? Unclear. Basically it seems to be he just wanted some attention and wanted someone Trumpier in the seat. Why it’s so important to have a more pro-MAGA speaker? I guess that’s a subject for the thread @Aspenglow just started.
Possibility one is he is able to rein in the most crazy and work out a deal that can pass the Senate with no or little shutdown and allow a vote for Ukraine aid.
Great!
Possibility two. A shitshow. He only empowers the craziest the most. Long shutdown. Block of Ukraine aid. Things that piss off the vast majority of Americans. Bad in the short term for sure but leads to correction in the next elections cycle. Maybe even before as public responses will be notable.
Until Gaetz gets up and starts out, “I rise to a question of priviledge …”
I give it 2 weeks and ask the mods if they close it now, can they reopen it at that time.
Regular votes are done by electronic system. It’s some special cases such as election of a Speaker that by rule or tradition require doing it the old fashioned way.
It seems like if you are going to replace the Speaker then you should also consider a new set of rules on how to conduct business. Alas, I haven’t seen any indication that they’re doing so.
Given how much grief the FC got over the last few weeks for “voting with the Democrats” to remove McCarthy, I don’t think that anyone near the center could afford to use the “one vote” rule to challenge Johnson’s position. Johnson’s going to know that he’s under the heel of the FC.
Except, he also has to deal with Schumer and McConnell. That’s where he might need to practice some mystic level two-facery to get anything accomplished with the Freedom Caucus.
I assume that the moderates wouldn’t have voted for him if they sensed any true fealty to Trump, election denialism, or anti-Constitutionality, so we should probably assume that he is pretty adept at the two-facery and they’ve seen the other faces showing through behind the scenes - ergo, their acceptance.
I’m relatively skeptical that most of the Freedom Caucus has any real policy goals past name making and grifting yokels for money and power. Assuming that to be so, they might decide to go ahead with Johnson and whatever policy he advances and turn their attention to some other method of trolling and name building. So, conceivably, his reign might be fairly uneventful and Deep State (aka reason based) normal.
I’m not sure which to vote for at the moment. Probably it depends on how many of the FC get put into committee head positions and as Johnson’s leadership team.
The leadership team will probably be the make or break issue in the coming weeks.
At first I thought you meant “block” as in a relatively-grouped-together set of measures for Ukraine aid and wondered why the American public would dislike that. But yeah, it’s possible that not only are the extremists trying to sow their usual anarcho-capitalist chaos, but that there are some pro-Putin right wingers in there who will try to wind down Ukraine aid as well. Although up until now, everyone who isn’t Trump has been quieter on that front that I had expected them to.
Maybe not. Remember McCarthy’s devil’s bargain to get in the first place was to allow even one member of the caucus to rise to depose the Speaker. If Johnson hasn’t made any such deal, so he doesn’t have to allow one or even five House members to bring a motion to depose the Speaker to the floor.
